YOUR MISSION

About the Organisation & Role:

You will be part of the Core Commerce Platform organisation responsible for delivering the omnichannel commerce capabilities that power the purchase journey, inventory availability, delivery promise, order processing & fulfilment and post-purchase experiences across channels. The organisation plays a critical role in ensuring products are available to buy, orders can be fulfilled reliably, and commitments made to consumers are delivered consistently. Through a portfolio of commerce platform capabilities, the organisation enables seamless omnichannel experiences while supporting efficient, scalable, and resilient commerce operations across the global digital ecosystem.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will design, build, and maintain production-grade backend services that power Inventory, Promise & Order Fulfilment capabilities. You will work closely with Tech Leads, Product Owners, and Data Engineering teams to deliver reliable, scalable, and low-latency services. You will actively contribute to design decisions, code reviews and mentor junior engineers in the team.

What you will do:

  • Design and operate secure, observable and resilient Java/Spring Boot services and low-latency APIs for inventory availability and order promising with performance suitable for peak and concurrent demand

  • Implement robust concurrency-control and consistency patterns to prevent overselling when multiple orders compete for limited inventory.

  • Build event-driven inventory processing using Kafka or similar messaging technologies to handle receipts, adjustments, reservations, releases, cancellations, and fulfilment updates in near real time.

  • Integrate inventory and promising services with OMS, commerce, WMS, ERP, store, and fulfilment platforms to provide consistent availability across the order lifecycle.

  • Independently own complex services or components from technical design through production.

  • Write clean, tested and maintainable code, participate in peer reviews, and maintain relevant technical documentation.

  • Optimize performance, scalability, reliability, and operational efficiency through automation and proactive improvements.

  • Support production services through monitoring, troubleshooting and root-cause analysis contributing to reliability improvements.

  • Lead component-level design, document trade-offs and contribute recommendations to team-level architecture decisions.

  • Mentor junior engineers, perform code reviews and help establish engineering standards and best practices.

YOUR TALENT
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field.

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience, with a strong track record of building and operating scalable, high-availability, consumer-facing platforms.

  • Strong hands-on software engineering experience with Java, Spring Boot, and modern microservices architectures, building scalable, resilient, and production-grade services.

  • Strong understanding of design patterns, data structures and algorithms, with practical experience applying them to real-world use cases.

  • Hands-on experience with Kafka or similar event-streaming platforms for event-driven architectures, asynchronous processing, and enterprise-scale system integrations.

  • Deep understanding of caching strategies and hands-on experience with Redis or equivalent technologies.

  • Strong understanding of concurrency, consistency, and transactional integrity patterns required to prevent overselling in distributed commerce environments.

  • Experience implementing event-driven architectures and designing resilient solutions that maintain accuracy under peak trading and high-volume conditions.

  • Experience designing graceful degradation and fallback mechanisms that ensure continuity of commerce operations during downstream system disruptions.

  • Strong experience with observability and operational excellence practices, including monitoring, distributed tracing and alerting.

  • Understanding of inventory management concepts, order promising and delivery estimation models, including inventory location, fulfilment capacity, carrier constraints, and service-level commitments is highly desirable.

  • Experience configuring, customizing, and extending OMS platform capabilities to support complex business requirements and omnichannel commerce use cases is preferred.

  • Hands-on experience integrating or configuring Fluent Commerce or a comparable OMS platform such as IBM Sterling OMS, Manhattan Associates, Kibo, Salesforce OMS, or similar technologies will be an advantage.

  • Experience using coding agents, LLMs or AI-assisted engineering tools to improve software delivery and developer productivity.

What you need to know about the Belfast Tech Scene

If asked to name the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, you might not say Belfast. Similarly, if asked to name Europe's leading destination for foreign direct investment in new software development, Belfast might not come to mind. Yet, both are true. The city has emerged as a tech powerhouse, recently ranked among the best in the U.K. for tech careers — especially for software developers. It also leads the U.K. with the highest percentage of software development jobs advertised.
