Department OverviewThe core mission of the security team is to establish and maintain a strong operational cybersecurity preparedness capability for Nødnett. The security team’s main task is to protect Nødnett by uncovering and handling threats and vulnerabilities as early as possible.
We do this through specialized expertise, clear procedures, disciplined documentation, and repeatable working methods in a tailored environment, as well as through regular training and exercises and close collaboration with selected operational environments both within and outside Nødnett, including our external SOC provider.
The security team is an integrated part of the operational environment that runs Nødnett.
Nødnett is Norway’s nationwide digital communication network for the country’s emergency and preparedness services, owned by the Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB). The primary users are the police, fire service, and health service, but the network is also used by more than one thousand other preparedness organizations, and has a total of around 150,000 users.
Motorola Solutions Norway AS is DSB’s contractor for the deployment, operation, and service of Nødnett. Motorola is responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the national Nødnett radio network, including base stations, transmission links, core network, and support systems. Motorola Solutions also provides lifecycle management and technology upgrades under the agreement, and monitors Nødnett around the clock from our operations center (NOC) in Oslo.
The workplace is Motorola Solutions Norway AS’s office premises at Kabelgata 34 in Økern, Oslo. Physical attendance is required during on-call duty and mobilization in the event of serious incidents. Working from home can be arranged when work tasks allow it.
Job Description
This is a role for someone who is comfortable taking ownership of technical solutions over time. You must be able to work independently, prioritize tasks, and make sound technical assessments in an environment where operational reliability and control carry significant weight, while there must also be a short path to new or improved solutions and services.
The role can best be described as a full-stack on-prem SecDevOps role. The primary practical responsibilities that come with the role are:
Plan, procure, install, and manage the platform’s physical infrastructure, including racks, cabling, servers, switches, firewalls, and access points.
Configure, harden, and operate Linux-based servers.
Configure, harden, and operate virtualization and container layers.
Configure and maintain network segmentation in the virtualization and container layers.
Configure and maintain core infrastructure services such as NTP, DNS, DHCP, and LDAP.
Develop and operate the platform’s management plane.
Ensure that backup and recovery capabilities are functioning at all times.
Design, establish, and operate analysis-adjacent services and data platforms.
Identify, develop, and maintain robust automation for repetitive tasks.
Ensure an appropriate level of telemetry and forensic readiness.
Monitor and manage the platform with regard to capacity, reliability, and security.
Own and follow up vulnerability management for the platform.
Turn experience from operations and incidents into measurable and documented improvements.
You will work in a small but independent team with end-to-end responsibility for the entire lifecycle of the network infrastructure, the core platform, and the service layer of our security enclave. You will be part of our CSIRT and contribute to the day-to-day security monitoring and incident handling in Nødnett. From 2027, you will also be part of the security team’s on-call rotation.
To be able to build cost-effective and tailored solutions for our needs that work locally and with limited internet access, we primarily use open-source software.
