Cyber Security Engineer
£60,000 - £66,000 plus great benefits (Work Level 5)
Manchester city centre - in this role you’ll work in a hybrid way splitting your time between home and the office once a week (find out more about our hybrid working policy at https://jobs.coop.co.uk/hybrid-working-policy).

This role is eligible for Skilled Worker (Tier 2) visa sponsorship

We’re open to applications from people who may require flexible working arrangements. There’ll be an opportunity to discuss your flexible working requirements during the interview process, and at offer stage.

We’re reshaping our Digital, Technology and Data function for the future, creating new opportunities, strengthening our capability, and building clearer, more resilient ways of working so we can deliver even better services for our Co-op, our colleagues, members and customers.

We're looking for a Cyber Security Engineer to join our Information Security team and help us strengthen and evolve our cyber security capabilities. In this role, you'll identify, implement and improve security technologies that protect our systems, data and services from emerging threats. Working across technology, security and assurance teams, you'll help ensure new solutions are secure, observable and aligned with our wider security strategy, while supporting the adoption of innovative technologies, including AI-enabled security capabilities.

Why this role matters

As the digital world changes, staying ahead of cyber threats is more important than ever. That’s where you come in. In this role you'll work on complex technical problems, influence security decisions across multiple teams, and help drive the future direction of security engineering, observability and automated security capabilities. It's an opportunity to combine hands-on engineering expertise with strategic influence, helping us build secure, resilient services for the future.

What you’ll do

•    Provide technical expertise in the design, implementation, configuration and ongoing improvement of cyber security tools and platforms
•    Evaluate and introduce new security technologies and capabilities that strengthen Co-op's cyber security posture
•    Support the adoption of AI-enabled security tools, automation and emerging technologies in a secure and controlled way
•    Work with observability and operational teams to ensure security systems provide meaningful data, monitoring and insight
•    Lead the investigation and resolution of security-related technical issues and risks
•    Collaborate with architecture, policy and compliance teams to ensure solutions align with security standards and regulatory requirements
•    Deliver secure integrations across cloud, SaaS and enterprise technology platforms
•    Influence stakeholders across technology and security teams, helping embed security best practice and improve organisational resilience

What you’ll bring

We’re committed to making our roles as accessible as possible, so we only ask for the minimum criteria. To thrive here, you’ll need to bring:

•    Experience working in a Cyber Security Engineering role, delivering security solutions within complex environments
•    Strong knowledge of security tooling, security operations, SIEM (Security Information and Event Management) platforms and security engineering best practices
•    Experience working with cloud-native security technologies and services
•    Knowledge of observability, monitoring, telemetry or related technologies that support operational insight and assurance
•    Experience evaluating, implementing or supporting emerging security technologies, automation or AI-enabled security capabilities
•    The ability to build relationships and influence technical and non-technical stakeholders
•    Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to deliver practical solutions in complex or evolving environments
•    An understanding of security architecture, risk, compliance and governance principles

We know some people may hesitate to apply if they don’t meet every requirement. At Co-op, we’re committed to building diverse and inclusive teams, so if you’re excited about this role but your experience doesn’t align perfectly, we still encourage you to apply.

Why Co-op?

At Co-op, we’re owned by our members. And because we’re owned by you, we can do right by you. So when you join us, you’re not just taking a job, you’re joining a movement. We’re an organisation that puts people and communities first, and we’re powered by purpose. We want this to be a place where you can thrive, so you’ll also receive:

•    An annual bonus (based on personal and business performance)
•    28 days holiday (rising to 32 with service) plus bank holidays
•    A pension with up to 10% employer contributions
•    Private healthcare
•    Access to a subsidised onsite gym (at our Manchester HQ)
•    30% discount on Co-op products and 10% off other brands
•    Stream – early access to a percentage of your pay as you earn it
•    Virtual healthcare including GP appointments, mental health support, nutrition and fitness advice
•    24/7 colleague support service
•    Training and support for your development and career progression
•    Cycle-to-work scheme

A place you’ll belong

We’re building diverse and inclusive teams that reflect the communities we serve. We welcome applications from everyone and are committed to creating a workplace where colleagues can feel like they belong, supported by our inclusive policies and the ways we work.

What you need to know about the Belfast Tech Scene

If asked to name the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, you might not say Belfast. Similarly, if asked to name Europe's leading destination for foreign direct investment in new software development, Belfast might not come to mind. Yet, both are true. The city has emerged as a tech powerhouse, recently ranked among the best in the U.K. for tech careers — especially for software developers. It also leads the U.K. with the highest percentage of software development jobs advertised.
