Mō te tūranga | About the Role

Join the Digital Workplace service group at Westpac as we seek a highly skilled and experienced Principal Engineer.

As Principal Engineer, you’ll lead the design, implementation, and support of Westpac’s enterprise messaging and collaboration platforms.  This role is pivotal for driving technical excellence and enabling efficient collaboration, ensuring secure and reliable communication across the organisation, directly impacting Westpac’s ability to operate and innovate. 

Beyond technical acumen, this position demands leadership maturity, strategic thinking, influencing technical direction, and driving adoption of best practices across teams.  You will act as a trusted advisor to senior leadership and play a key role in shaping the future of our messaging ecosystem. 

Ko tō mahi | What you’ll do 

  • Architect and manage Microsoft Exchange environments, both Online, On-Premises, and Hybrid, to enable secure, scalable messaging for the organisation. 

  • Lead the design, support, and integration of projects connecting Exchange to other enterprise systems using Microsoft Graph API, Exchange Web Services (EWS), and REST APIs. 

  • Develop and maintain advanced PowerShell scripts to automate processes, streamline reporting, and drive operational efficiency. 

  • Design and implement hybrid messaging solutions, ensuring seamless coexistence and effective migration strategies between platforms. 

  • Act as the technical authority for Microsoft 365 messaging and compliance features – supporting eDiscovery, retention policies, and litigation hold. 

  • Build strong working relationships with senior stakeholders across technology and business units, including partnering with security and legal teams to ensure messaging platforms comply with regulatory and legal standards. 

  • Safeguard sensitive information and ensure confidentiality while operating within structured governance and compliance frameworks. 

  • Guide and mentor to provide technical leadership to engineers and support teams to deliver messaging and collaboration outcomes for the business, fostering learning and capability uplift. 

  • Stay current with Microsoft technologies and industry trends, proactively recommending improvements and innovations. 

  • Champion engineering excellence by defining, communicating, and promoting best practices, coding standards, and automation strategies. 

  • Advocate for technology adoption across teams to ensure alignment with Westpac’s organisational goals and strategy. 

  • Maintain clear, comprehensive documentation to support architecture, operations, and troubleshooting. 

  • Establish and report on key health, usage, and compliance metrics via actionable dashboards and reports. 

  • Ensure platform resilience and security through high availability, disaster recovery strategies, and advanced security controls 

Nā tāu rourou | What will you bring? 

  • Extensive experience (10+ years) in enterprise messaging systems, with a strong focus on Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft 365. 

  • Expert-level technical skills in:
    • Microsoft Exchange On-Premises (2019/SE),  
    • Exchange Online and Hybrid configurations 
    • Microsoft 365 compliance and eDiscovery tools 
    • PowerShell scripting and automation 
    • API integrations (Microsoft Graph, EWS, REST) 
  • Strong understanding of Active Directory, Azure AD, and identity management. 

  • Proven ability to manage mail flow, transport rules, connectors, and security configurations. 

  • Familiarity with compliance processes (e.g., Microsoft Purview, Compliance Center, litigation hold processes). 

  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to lead in complex technical initiatives and cross-functional teams. 

  • Experience coaching and mentoring fellow engineers, encouraging a culture of continuous improvement. 

  • Strong stakeholder engagement and ability to translate technical concepts into business outcomes.

  • Experience working within established delivery frameworks and managing operational responsibilities in critical environments. 

Preferred: 

  • Microsoft Certified: Exchange Online or Microsoft 365 Expert certifications 

  • Experience with large-scale migrations to Exchange Online 

  • Knowledge of other Microsoft 365 services (Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive) 

  • Experience in regulated industries with strict compliance requirements
