As an Engineering Manager, you will lead our development team and own what it commits to. You will also own how the team works, so that a new developer can learn it in their first week.
The development team and how we workYou would lead our development team, five people today and growing: four developers and a QA engineer. Product is a separate team of four, led by our Lead Product Manager.
Our Principal Engineer works alongside you and owns the architecture, the database schema, the technologies we build on, and what our development standard says. You own the people, the commitments, the process, and whether the standard is followed in the work that ships. Neither of you reports to the other, and you both report to the Director of Product and Service.
This role is being created as part of the restructure that comes with becoming a multi-product company.
Our developers direct coding agents and verify what comes back, so most of an engineer's day is design and review rather than manually writing code.
We run two products on one platform: the survey software, and Edurio Hub, the second product we are building now. The platform is mid-migration, so we are reducing the PHP monolith, moving the front end to Vue 3, and building new services on AWS with CDK.
You would be working with Vue and TypeScript, AWS Lambda and CDK, and with Linear, Slack, Claude, and other tools of your choice.
Your responsibilitiesLead the developers and the QA engineer: expectations and performance, growth, workload and wellbeing, keeping people here, and hiring future engineers
Actively participate in writing code yourself - we are looking for a player-coach rather than a manager who is removed from coding
Own the team’s commitments, release planning and adjusting the plan when something unexpected happens
Own how we estimate work and ensure the accuracy and consistency of estimates given by the development team
Run the rhythm the team works to: standups, planning, demos and retrospectives
Ensure that the team follows our development standards and highlight situations where our standards do not match current practice
Own how development and product work together, from the kick-off to a release the product team can explain to clients
Explain the technical side to the rest of the company: what an incident means, what a security questionnaire is asking for, and what a constraint will cost
Experience of leading in an engineering team that builds with coding agents
Ability to handle the people side: holding the team accountable, ensuring the team’s wellbeing and leading growth planning and performance conversations.
Enough seniority h in engineering to coordinate the team’s work, although we don’t expect you to be the most experienced engineer in the room
Experience putting a development process in place and teaching it, rather than running one you inherited
Ability to explain delivery, risk and trade-offs to people who do not write software
Advanced use of AI and coding agents in your own work
Excellent verbal and written English skills
Experience with Typescript, Vue or AWS serverless
Experience of a platform migration that ran alongside feature work
Experience or interest in the EdTech sector

Gross salary from EUR 5000 per month in Latvia or GBP 60,000 per annum in the UK, as well as company share options, paid phone plan, and health insurance.
