Who we are

At Twilio, we’re shaping the future of communications, all from the comfort of our homes. We deliver innovative solutions to hundreds of thousands of businesses and empower millions of developers worldwide to craft personalized customer experiences.

Our dedication to remote-first work, and strong culture of connection and global inclusion mean that no matter your location, you’re part of a vibrant, diverse team making a global impact each day. As we continue to revolutionize how the world interacts, we’re acquiring new skills and experiences that make work feel truly rewarding. Your career at Twilio is in your hands.

About the job

In this role, you’ll create documentation that helps developers build with Twilio products. As a Developer Educator, the documentation you’ll create is part of a larger story that tells customers what and how they can build with Twilio. Developers are at the heart of everything we do at Twilio and as a Developer Educator, you’ll use written content to teach developers how to build amazing things. Your primary responsibility will be to create highly technical documentation that is clear, correct, comprehensive, and easy to use. You’ll work collaboratively with other Developer Educators to create, maintain, and improve our vast product documentation. Because you’ll be writing for developers, you’ll need to have high technical proficiency and be able to test and document APIs, write sample code, and deeply understand the products you’re documenting. As a Developer Educator, you’ll work closely with peers across the organization and will independently seek out information and take the initiative to form close relationships with stakeholders.

Responsibilities

In this role, you’ll:

  • Work collaboratively with other Developer Educators to review, edit, and create developer documentation for feature releases using our docs-as-code platform.
  • Write highly technical developer documentation like tutorials and quickstarts that contain sample code.
  • Compassionately review draft documentation from other Developer Educators as well as contributions from internal collaborators outside of the Developer Education team.
  • Be an active participant in the team’s Agile processes, including sprint planning, retros, and regular syncs.
  • Learn about Twilio’s products, and become an advocate for our developers.

Qualifications

Not all applicants will have skills that match a job description exactly. Twilio values diverse experiences in other industries, and we encourage everyone who meets the required qualifications to apply. While having “desired” qualifications make for a strong candidate, we encourage applicants with alternative experiences to also apply. If your career is just starting or hasn't followed a traditional path, don't let that stop you from considering Twilio. We are always looking for people who will bring something new to the table!

Required:

  • You have:
    • 2-4 years of experience writing, reviewing, and maintaining product documentation.
    • Experience documenting APIs and using tools like Postman.
    • Excellent skills in grammar, and experience with minimalist documentation design.
    • Familiarity with one or more coding languages.
    • Deep empathy for the developer experience and an ability to use that empathy to create a better developer experience in the documentation.
    • Ability to give and receive compassionate, helpful feedback to teammates both on and off your direct team.
  • You are:
    • Highly organized and able to work on numerous issues and projects simultaneously.
    • Able to succeed in a remote, globally-distributed work environment.
    • Comfortable working in a highly collaborative environment.
    • Curious about new products and technologies and excited about sharing what you learn with our customers.

Desired:

  • Experience with some of the following:
    • Working in a remote, async environment with teammates across countries and time zones.

Experience working with a docs-as-code platform and workflow.

    • Using command-line Git.
    • A professional background in either development with a strong writing focus or writing with a strong development focus.
    • Experience with workflows and tooling used by engineering, operations, and product teams.

What you need to know about the Belfast Tech Scene

If asked to name the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, you might not say Belfast. Similarly, if asked to name Europe's leading destination for foreign direct investment in new software development, Belfast might not come to mind. Yet, both are true. The city has emerged as a tech powerhouse, recently ranked among the best in the U.K. for tech careers — especially for software developers. It also leads the U.K. with the highest percentage of software development jobs advertised.
