We are launching the latest edition of our Data & AI Academy program. You don’t need to be fully experienced as a Data Engineer – what we expect from you is a strong interest in Data and AI, along with a willingness to learn. 

 

By joining the program, you will start 6 weeks of training (internal and external), you will be introduced to the system of work in Kainos and equipped with a package of new knowledge, you will be ready to start working in one of our projects. 

 

As a Data Engineer (Associate) in Kainos you will work within a multi-skilled agile team to design and develop large-scale data processing software to meet user needs in demanding production environments. 

 

 

WHAT TO EXPECT AS A DATA ENGINEER JOINING THE ACADEMY: 

 

 6-week training program – internal and external on, but not limited to the following; 

  • Cloud concepts 

  • Databases 

  • ETL  

  • Flows monitoring 

  • Data visualisation  

  • Queueing Systems 

  • AI/ ML 

  • Agentic AI 

  • Data monitoring 

 

 

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES IN THE BUSINESS: 

 

  • Working as part of a team – you will work alongside colleagues in engineering, testing, consulting, product management, and security capabilities to build, test and deploy software of the highest quality. 

  • You will assist in using the latest technologies to extract maximum user and business benefit. 

  • You will work with and learn from your colleagues fostering an open and inclusive culture. 

  • As your confidence grows, you will increasingly be contributing your views to ensure that services are scalable, secure, reliable, and performant. 

  • Getting services into production is just the beginning with the fun truly starting when real users start interacting with the service you have built.  

  • You will assist in ensuring services are available, secure and performant as you actively make recommendations for continuous improvement. 

  • Working to develop data processing software primarily for deployment in Big Data technologies. The role encompasses the full software lifecycle including design, code, test and defect resolution. 

  • Collaborating with colleagues to resolve implementation challenges and ensure code quality and maintainability remains high. 

  • Working with operations teams to ensure operational readiness. 

  • Working with other team members to advise on the estimated effort and possible technical implications of user stories and user journeys. 

  • You will develop effective habits for using modern engineering tools, including AI, to support learning, problem-solving, and day-to-day delivery tasks 

 

EXPERIENCE & PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE: 

 

Candidates are expected to demonstrate proven experience in some of the following areas, with practical working knowledge across others 

 

  • a proven ability of strong team skills, including taking direction from others, is crucial. 

  • Software development experience in at least one of the following, Java, Scala, or Python. 

  • Software development experience with data-processing platforms, such as, Azure, GCP, Databricks and AWS. 

  • Experience in SQL and SQL extensions for analytical queries. 

  • Experience in developing ETL/ELT data processing pipelines. 

  • Experience of working with data in various formats such as JSON and XML. 

  • Experience of working with contemporary data stores such as object stores, document stores, key-value store, search, RDBMS, graph. 

  • Experience in writing quality, testable code and automated testing. 

  • Experience with Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment techniques. 

 

DESIRABLE: 

 

  • Experience of performance tuning. 

  • Experience of data visualisation and complex data transformations. 

  • Understanding of data redaction implementations. 

  • Participation in development and/or technology communities.
