What's It Like to Work at Cohere Health?

Cohere Health Employee Perspectives

What is your role, and what attracted you to Cohere Health? Describe the moment when you knew you’d found the right fit.

I’m an engineering manager at Cohere Health, leading the clinical intelligence team. Our team focuses on building technology that streamlines the prior authorization process within the healthcare industry. Cohere Health, founded in 2019, is a fast-paced, rapidly growing startup that aims to remove unnecessary delays in patient care by enabling faster access to healthcare services.

What truly sets Cohere Health apart is how we leverage AI and machine learning models to enhance the accuracy of decision-making. Our product uses these models to intelligently assess prior authorization requests, identifying cases that can be auto-approved and escalating more complex scenarios to nurses or physicians for personalized review. This combination of AI-powered automation and human expertise ensures patients receive timely care without compromising clinical oversight.

What’s your favorite part about working at Cohere Health?

What I love most about working at Cohere Health is the perfect blend of innovation, collaboration and growth. Despite being a remote-first company, there’s a strong sense of connection among employees — everyone is supportive and always willing to lend a hand. It’s a culture where distance doesn’t diminish collaboration. We may be spread across time zones, but teamwork feels seamless.

From a technology standpoint, Cohere Health truly breaks the mold of traditional healthcare tech. Our tech stack embraces cutting-edge tools and frameworks, far from the rigid legacy systems often seen in the industry. What’s even more exciting is the company’s forward-thinking mindset; if there’s a strong case for a new technology, there’s an open door to explore it. This constant push for innovation keeps us agile and future-focused.

What advice would you give to job seekers looking to join your growing team?

In today’s competitive job market, where AI and machine learning dominate every conversation, my advice is simple: Don’t lose sight of the fundamentals. While it’s great to stay curious about the latest innovations, having a solid grasp of core software development principles and foundational technologies is what truly sets candidates apart. At Cohere Health, we value engineers who not only understand how to build with cutting-edge tools but also know when — and why — to use them.

Another key piece of advice is to master the art of storytelling when discussing your project experiences. It’s not just about what you built — it’s about the story behind it. When sharing your work, set the stage by explaining the project’s context and its impact. Talk about your role, the challenges you faced, the trade-offs you navigated and how you collaborated with cross-functional partners.

Cohere Health’s approach to cross-functional collaboration is grounded in empathy, understanding, and meeting people at their unique experience levels and backgrounds.

Ultimately, if we all speak the same language, we can achieve far more together.

In one sentence, why does the mission matter to your team — and what decision did it guide recently?

We’re focused on the patient. Being able to provide the right care at the right time and at the right value, is a mission that matters to everyone around the table. We built a platform that lets us help the industry get one step closer towards this goal and our entire team is passionate about this cause.

All of the investments we’re making are to further this mission. Most recently, this is reflected in our expansion into payment solutions with the acquisition of ZignaAI.

Which initiative best demonstrates the impact of the mission — and how was its success measured?

The underlying capability of our clinical intelligence platform lets us understand a patient’s unique circumstance and the right course of care, driving the biggest impact. Ultimately, we measure success by the number of patients we impact in a positive direction to help them achieve better outcomes and quality of life.

What ritual or behavior convinces people the mission is real?

Everyone has a personal connection to healthcare, so it’s not hard to relate to our mission. We work hard to remember that each case we process is a real patient and not just a number on the screen. Our physicians bring forward countless real-world examples to bring our impact to life.

Cohere Health Employee Reviews

Cohere’s hybrid work model has worked very well for me. During my tenure, there have been extended periods of time where I've been fully remote and extended periods of time where I've been based out of our Boston office. A lot of my professional success has come from opportunities for me to meet in person with my colleagues quarterly.

Celebrating inclusivity is one of the important factors I look for in a workplace. Reflecting upon today's current affairs, it is far more important than ever to come together as one people with humanity. Cohere celebrating Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month means a lot to all of us with diverse heritage.

At Cohere, I've had the distinct pleasure of building a fully remote team from scratch. I've been successful because of the company's ability to establish, promote & encourage open lines of communication. Our brainstorming sessions have not only improved our processes and workflows but also helped build long standing friendships with colleagues.
