We’re looking for a mid-level User Researcher to help transform how people access personal money advice. In this strategic and hands-on role, you’ll lead research initiatives to shape new and existing services, by uncovering user insights, and driving evidence-based decisions across the business. This opportunity offers broad scope, meaningful impact, and the chance to grow within a fast-scaling company revolutionising financial wellbeing.

About Octopus Money

At Octopus Money, we’re on a mission to make money advice accessible to all – because the right advice can turn your life dreams into reality.

The facts are alarming: half of Brits reach retirement age without enough money to live the life they want, financial stress is a leading cause of poor mental health and only 8% of us have access to 1-to-1 advice.

There’s plenty of information out there, but most of us just wish that someone we trust would tell us what to do with our money!

With Octopus, you get a personalised plan and a friendly expert to help you make it happen. We combine advisers, coaches and technology to understand your situation and recommend the right steps for your savings, investments, pensions and more. Then, we make it easy to invest in a custom portfolio, managed by experts.

We believe everyone deserves personal, 1-to-1 advice with their money.

The role and opportunity

The User Researcher will play a key role in shaping how people experience both our new and existing services. Working closely with our proposition, marketing and growth teams, you’ll champion evidence-based decision-making to boost engagement and improve customer outcomes.

The role has significant potential for progression and the ideal candidate will be excited about joining a business experiencing rapid growth and innovation, with an ability to strategically prioritise work to influence the highest impact areas. You’ll be joining our senior user researcher, and have plenty of scope to shape the tools and processes of our user research function.

Day to day you will be:

  • Leading research projects: Take ownership of your research projects from start to finish, ensuring they meet our high standards of quality and deliver on our strategic objectives.
  • Collaborating cross-functionally: Partner with proposition leads, marketing managers, data analysts, and senior stakeholders to prioritise research objectives and scope the appropriate research approach, given the learning objectives.
  • Strategically prioritise projects: Work with the senior researcher and proposition leads to prioritise your time to influence the highest impact areas, given the strategic objectives of the business.
  • Uncovering deep user insight: Use a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods to reveal user behaviours, needs, and motivations, surfacing insights that address the most critical risks to the success of new or existing services.
  • Championing evidence-based design: Work creatively and resourcefully to increase the visibility of key research insights, bringing user needs to the forefront of decision-making across the business, and making sure action is taken as a result.
About You

A genuine desire to help people
We are a mission-driven business, so it’s important that you can demonstrate a strong desire to help people and improve their lives.

Collaborative and a great team player
We’ve built a great team of top performers, and you’ll need to work with others from across the business to identify problems, agree solutions and implement changes

Problem solver at heart with an analytical mindset
You should be someone who gets excited by complex problems and can find creative ways to solve them no matter what your level of knowledge and experience with the subject matter. You should be able to digest complexity and develop a plan to move forward, without losing sight of the important details.

Goal driven and not afraid to get stuck in
We like to set ambitious goals and find creative ways to hit them, even if that means rolling up our sleeves and doing manual tasks before we’ve managed to fully automate them. You should have a bias towards action and getting things done.

Strong research experience
You don’t need to have experience in all research methodologies, but understanding when different methodologies are most appropriate given the learning objectives, would be a strong plus. Experience scoping and briefing recruitment of test subjects with recruitment partners is a must.

Knowledge required

  • At least 5 years of hands-on user research experience in fast paced digital and service development environments, whether in-house, freelance, or in an agency.
  • Expertise in a range of research methods (e.g., in-depth interviews, usability testing, surveys, diary studies, A/B testing).
  • Ability to distill complex research findings into actionable insights and refine how you communicate to engage teams, from short-form summaries to presentations, workshops, or insight decks.
  • Strong portfolio or case studies demonstrating how your research influenced live product/service decisions and delivered business value.
  • Ability to lead research projects independently, working collaboratively in teams where you are the sole researcher.

Nice to have (but not necessary)

  • Experience working in a regulated industry (e.g. finance, healthcare)
  • Experience working with agile service delivery
  • Experience with continuous discovery methods
  • Knowledge of, or interest in, accessibility standards
  • Knowledge of, or interest, in content strategy

In return for your contribution we offer a base salary of £40,000 - £50,000 DOE + benefits

Please note, as a regulated business we are required to run background checks for all employees which covers adverse financial and unspent convictions. These will only take place upon a successful job offer.

What you need to know about the Belfast Tech Scene

If asked to name the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, you might not say Belfast. Similarly, if asked to name Europe's leading destination for foreign direct investment in new software development, Belfast might not come to mind. Yet, both are true. The city has emerged as a tech powerhouse, recently ranked among the best in the U.K. for tech careers — especially for software developers. It also leads the U.K. with the highest percentage of software development jobs advertised.
