Company Description

Wise is a global technology company, building the best way to move and manage the world’s money. Min fees. Max ease. Full speed.

Whether people and businesses are sending money to another country, spending abroad, or making and receiving international payments, Wise is on a mission to make their life easier and save them money.

As part of our team, you will be helping us create an entirely new network for the world's money. For everyone, everywhere.

More about our mission.

Job Description

About the role

We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer with a passion for building and scaling services and systems to join the Developer Enablement Squad. Though the role is focused on the SDLC (scalable, efficient and secure), we work closely with other squads (Security, Reliability, Cloud Platform, Data) to work on important engineering-wide challenges.

The Developer Enablement Squad’s mission is to enable engineers to ship at the speed of a startup, with the security of a bank. We provide tools, frameworks and best practices that engineers use to build, test and deploy their code, as well as manage the product lifecycle of their services.

At Wise we expect our Staff Engineers to have a deep understanding of the technology we use, an ability to take end-to-end ownership of projects, and mentor and coach other engineers and teams. This role has the potential to improve the experience of every Wise customer by improving the speed and security with which we put new functionality in their hands.

How we work

We operate on a strong belief in automation, programmatic implementation, and reusable design. We’re looking for people who can step back and think holistically about the ecosystem, but also follow through and help implement the design; drawing on the resources across the rest of the platform tribe.

As we grow, and our technology estate becomes more complex, the need for a secure, frictionless SDLC increases exponentially. By adopting industry-leading tools and best practices, we make it possible for engineers across the business to focus on what matters most to them - delivering value to Wise customers. We need to sustain this growth by continuously iterating on the services we run, with a focus on availability, security, and ease of use. We’re looking for an engineer with relevant experience who can analyse complex requirements and deliver simple solutions to help our teams achieve our mission with speed and confidence.

What will you be working on?

  • Projects that have significant impact on the developer experience of engineers, focusing on increasing flow state, reducing cognitive load and faster feedback loops.

  • Building and advising on the infrastructure, tooling, and foundation of the technical parts of Wise

  • Deepening CI/CD systems & their integrations across an organisation so that product teams can work efficiently

  • Understand our internal customers and the impact our service offerings makes in their lives

  • Keeping security and compliance-first mindset in the products we develop, and make this easily consumable by Engineering.

What do you need?

We are fully aware that it is uncommon for a candidate to have all skills required and we fully support everyone in learning new skills with us. So if you have some of those listed below and are eager to learn more we do want to hear from you!

  • Experience writing clean, reusable code in Go, Java or Python.

  • Experience designing CI/CD pipelines with knowledge of how to use them to automate the SDLC in line with CI/CD best practices.

  • An understanding of the role testing plays in managing change risk and experience designing and implementing a test strategy in line with best practices.

  • Experience of cloud platforms (e.g. AWS, GCP)

  • Experience of containerisation technology and orchestration platforms e.g. Docker, Kubernetes

  • Knowledge of architectural concepts such as microservices, service mesh

  • Understand SRE principles, scaling and resiliency for various Platform service offerings

  • A broad range of skills and knowledge with a deep understanding of certain domains.

  • You’re passionate about helping others and keen to roll up your sleeves and take ownership to drive company-wide impact

Nice to Have:

  • Experience working with Github (+ Actions)

  • Experience working with Spinnaker

  • Experience with test automation frameworks and test data management

What you need to know about the Belfast Tech Scene

If asked to name the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, you might not say Belfast. Similarly, if asked to name Europe's leading destination for foreign direct investment in new software development, Belfast might not come to mind. Yet, both are true. The city has emerged as a tech powerhouse, recently ranked among the best in the U.K. for tech careers — especially for software developers. It also leads the U.K. with the highest percentage of software development jobs advertised.
