Why you will love this opportunity as a Frontend Staff Engineer at Civica
As our first Staff Engineer focused on front-end technologies, you will play a foundational role in shaping how front-end engineering operates across the business. Working across multiple teams, you will define our technical and organisational approach to building modular, accessible, and modern UI experiences—primarily using React.
You will also drive the evolution of Firefly Civica’s design system. Firefly is a critical component of our product strategy, powering product teams across the organisation and enabling them to create accessible, consistent, and engaging multi-platform user experiences.
This role is a unique opportunity to establish the front-end engineering function in a greenfield environment. You will be instrumental in forming the standards, practices, frameworks, and community needed to build for scale and longevity.
Key responsibilities
- Define and evolve front-end engineering practices, tooling, and shared frameworks (with React at the core).
- Lead the development of Firefly – Civica's Design System, that serves as the foundation for our unified platform.
- Collaborate across multiple teams to ensure a consistent, high-quality front-end experience.
- Partner with UX, accessibility, and product teams to establish inclusive and effective ways of working.
- Act as a mentor and trusted collaborator to front-end engineers across the organisation.
- Contribute to long-term technical direction, with a focus on modularity, reusability, and accessibility.
- Facilitate cross-team learning, knowledge sharing, and healthy architectural alignment.
- Navigate ambiguity and help co-create the organisation’s path toward consolidated delivery.
Requirements:
- Deep technical expertise and application: Demonstrated capability in front-end engineering (React, modern JS/TS tooling, accessibility, visual testing, performance), with the ability to apply this across complex systems.
- Problem-solving & ambiguity navigation: Thoughtful and creative in finding practical paths through undefined or legacy contexts.
- Influence & collaboration: Operates as horizontal glue—able to build trust across teams, foster shared understanding, and coach others without direct authority.
- System and organisational thinking: Understands how technology decisions shape team dynamics, user experience, and business outcomes. Familiar with platform or enabling team models.
- Design System Expertise: Proven experience with design system initiatives, desirable experience with design tokens and documentation tools e.g. Figma, Supernova, Zeroheight.
Nice to Have
- Knowledge of front-end frameworks and component architecture in React, Angular or Flutter.
- Experience with accessibility (WCAG), visual regression testing, and modern CI/CD workflows.
- Awareness of Team Topologies or similar org design models.
