Mō te tūranga | About the Role

We are seeking a Software Engineer - Data to join our Product Engineering team and support the delivery of secure, scalable, and reliable data driven software solutions across Westpac. This role plays an important part in enabling trusted data access, improving data quality, and helping the business make better, more informed decisions.

You will work end to end across the software development lifecycle while contributing to engineering standards, automation, and continuous improvement. This role is key to strengthening our data platforms and supporting analytics, regulatory reporting, customer insights, and digital product experiences.

Ko tō mahi | What you’ll do

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain data driven software solutions such as data pipelines, services, APIs, and platform components.

  • Translate business, analytics, and regulatory requirements into well engineered, scalable technical solutions.

  • Apply modern engineering practices such as clean code, modular design, and automated testing.

  • Build and evolve integrations between core banking systems, data platforms, analytics tools, and downstream consumers.

  • Support the growth of cloud based data platforms and shared data services.

  • Make improvements to performance, reliability, and cost efficiency of data processing and storage.

  • Ensure solutions meet Westpac standards for data quality, accuracy, security, and observability.

  • Embed privacy by design, security controls, and responsible data use.

  • Build monitoring, logging, and alerting that supports strong operational resilience.

  • Improve engineering practices through automation, refactoring, and adoption of modern tools and patterns.

  • Support technical standards, documentation, and knowledge sharing across the community.

Nā tāu rourou | What will you bring?

  • Strong background in software engineering with experience in data pipelines, services, APIs, and platforms.

  • Proficiency in languages such as Python, Java, or Scala.

  • Experience with relational and non relational data stores, data modelling, and data integration.

  • Demonstrated experience with CI/CD, automated testing, and infrastructure as code.

  • Familiarity with event driven architectures, APIs, and distributed systems.

  • Strong understanding of engineering principles including testability, maintainability, and observability.

  • Ability to diagnose and resolve issues across multiple layers of the engineering stack.

  • Understanding of data governance, data quality, and responsible data use.

  • Ability to deliver high quality data solutions that meet enterprise standards.

  • Reduction of defects and incidents through strong engineering controls.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with technical and non technical teams.

  • Commitment to engineering excellence, best practice, and continuous improvement.
