Description

About Zego

At Zego, we understand that traditional motor insurance holds good drivers back. It's too complicated, too expensive, and it doesn't reflect how well you actually drive. Since 2016, we have been on a mission to change that by offering the lowest priced insurance for good drivers.
From van drivers and gig workers to everyday car drivers, our customers are the driving force behind everything we do. We've sold tens of millions of policies and raised over $200 million in funding. And we’re only just getting started.

Overview of our Engineering Team

Zego puts technology first in its mission to define the future of the insurance industry. By focusing on our customers' needs we're building the flexible and sustainable insurance products and services that they deserve. And we do that by empowering a diverse, resourceful, and creative team of engineers that thrive on challenge and innovation.

Purpose of the Role

You will play a key role in shaping the future of the System Engineering function at Zego

  • You will be part of the team ultimately responsible for the uptime of the Zego Hosting Platform and services.
  • You will collaborate closely with Product Engineers to help build secure, scalable and reliable products and services.
  • You will champion agile methodologies and metrics to support the team in driving effective and concise delivery

What you will be doing

  • You will contribute to shaping the Zego Hosting Platform used by our engineers to build the next generation of products and services
  • You will work to improve our delivery processes (CI/CD pipelines) and ensure our monitoring systems are efficient and user friendly
  • You will share learnings internally and externally through guilds, meet-ups and conferences
  • You will contribute to code reviews following coding standards

About you

We are looking for engineers who embrace the DevOps culture to deliver continuous improvements to our infrastructure. Engaging with and empowering the teams to drive change leveraging metrics, championing automation and operational excellence.

  • Good coding and scripting skills in languages such as Bash and Python with a focus on automating infrastructure tasks, monitoring, and process optimisation.
  • Experience configuring Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform, Crossplane, and Helm, with a focus on building scalable, reliable, and reproducible infrastructure.
  • Good knowledge of AWS cloud services, especially core services like VPC, S3, EC2, Kinesis, RDS, and EKS, with experience in multi-account setups and optimising for performance and cost-efficiency.
  • Skilled in container management and orchestration using Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, Service Mesh (ie. Istio) and GitOps (ie. ArgoCD), with a focus on streamlined deployments and managing complex service-oriented architectures.
  • Experienced in leveraging observability tools, such as Honeycomb (OpenTelemetry) and DataDog, to support data-driven decisions across the wider engineering team.
  • Comprehensive understanding of networking in cloud environments, including VPN solutions, efficient network configuration, load balancing, and troubleshooting.

  • You will be someone who’s actively curious about how AI can enhance your work - keen to experiment, learn quickly, and apply tools that improve productivity, streamline tasks, or unlock new ways of thinking. Whether you’re already hands-on or fast building confidence, you take ownership of staying ahead and working smarter.

If possible, we'd also love you to have

How we work

We believe that teams work better when they have time to collaborate and space to get things done. We call it Zego Hybrid. While some of our team choose to come into our central London office once a week, we’re flexible - some people prefer being in once a month or even quarterly. It’s all about finding the right balance between collaborative face time and focused home-working, so we can achieve great results while maintaining a healthy work-life balance

Zego's approach to AI

We believe in the power of AI to meaningfully improve how we work - helping us move faster, think differently, and focus on what matters most. At Zego, we encourage people to stay curious and intentional about how AI is leveraged in their work and teams to drive practical impact every day. This is your chance to do the most meaningful work of your career - and we’ll provide you with the tools, support, and freedom to do it well.

Benefits

We reward our people well. Join us and you’ll get a market-competitive salary, private medical insurance, company share options, generous holiday allowance, and a whole lot of wellbeing benefits. And that’s just for starters. We also cover the costs for all company-wide events (3 per year), and also provide a separate hybrid contribution to help pay towards other travel costs.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability status.

What you need to know about the Belfast Tech Scene

If asked to name the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, you might not say Belfast. Similarly, if asked to name Europe's leading destination for foreign direct investment in new software development, Belfast might not come to mind. Yet, both are true. The city has emerged as a tech powerhouse, recently ranked among the best in the U.K. for tech careers — especially for software developers. It also leads the U.K. with the highest percentage of software development jobs advertised.
