The Role
The Data Operations Platform team is part of Block's AI, Data & Analytics organization and is responsible for developing and managing the company's Lakehouse platform, powered by Databricks and Snowflake. The team provides the foundational data infrastructure that powers analytics, machine learning, and AI initiatives across Block. The team also focuses on building and operating the core Lakehouse infrastructure, developing frameworks for scalable data ingestion, and ensuring data quality, governance, and reliability across the company's data ecosystem. We oversee critical ingestion pipelines supporting key business and AI use cases, and serve as subject matter experts in data ingestion, query optimization, and Lakehouse architecture at the company.
As a Senior Software Engineer on the team, you will be responsible for designing and building scalable, reliable, and efficient data platform components that extend the capabilities of Block's Lakehouse. You will improve the team's internal frameworks and tooling to enhance developer experience, drive standardization, and ensure best practices across data workflows. In this role, you will have a direct impact on accelerating data-driven innovation, enabling AI and analytics capabilities, and enhancing the performance and reliability of Block's data ecosystem.

You Will
  • Design, build, and enhance the core components and frameworks that power Block's Lakehouse platform.
  • Develop and maintain standardized data ingestion frameworks that enable internal teams to build robust, efficient, and governed data pipelines.
  • Collaborate closely with product, data engineering, machine learning, and AI teams to understand their data needs, design scalable solutions, and ensure seamless integration with the Lakehouse platform.
  • Establish and promote best practices for Lakehouse architecture, data governance, cost optimization, and query performance.
  • Contribute to the long-term technical vision for Block's data platform by identifying opportunities for innovation and shaping the future of data operations infrastructure.

You Have
  • 8+ years of industry experience in software engineering or data platform development, with a focus on building scalable data systems or distributed infrastructure
  • Strong programming proficiency in languages such as Python, Java or Go, with experience developing data frameworks, libraries, or services.
  • Hands-on experience with modern data platforms and distributed data processing systems such as Apache Spark.
  • Solid understanding of data modeling, ETL/ELT processes, and data lake or Lakehouse architectures.
  • Experience with cloud-based data ecosystems (AWS, GCP, or Azure).

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate's starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.
