Mō te tūranga | About the Role

At Westpac, our purpose is to help New Zealanders succeed. We’re looking for a commercially minded, people‑focused compliance leader to step into a pivotal role shaping how compliance supports our products, customers, and business conduct.

This is a senior leadership role with broad exposure across market conduct, business products, merchant and interchange activity, and Institutional Banking & Business (IBB). You’ll lead a high‑performing team, provide strong independent challenge, and work closely with senior stakeholders to embed practical, effective compliance across the organisation.

As Senior Manager Commercial Compliance, you will:

  • Lead and develop a team of compliance professionals, building capability, accountability, and a strong risk and conduct culture

  • Own commercial compliance oversight across market conduct, product governance, merchant/interchange, and IBB

  • Provide trusted advice and constructive challenge to senior leaders on compliance obligations and conduct risk

  • Oversee the identification, investigation, remediation, and reporting of compliance incidents and breaches

  • Embed compliance frameworks and conduct risk controls into business operations and product lifecycles

  • Monitor emerging regulatory change and assess impacts on products and customer outcomes

  • Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and regulators, representing Westpac in industry forums where required

  • Ensure timely escalation of issues and delivery of pragmatic, risk‑appropriate solutions

Nā tāu rourou | What will you bring?

  • A tertiary qualification in law, finance, compliance, or a related discipline

  • 10+ years’ experience in financial services, with at least 5 years in a senior compliance or second‑line risk role

  • Deep knowledge of market conduct, product governance, merchant/interchange, and banking regulatory frameworks

  • Proven people leadership experience, with the ability to coach, influence, and develop high‑performing teams

  • Strong stakeholder management skills and experience engaging with regulators

  • The ability to balance regulatory rigour with commercial pragmatism

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including governance‑level reporting

  • Experience using compliance data, MI, and reporting tools (e.g. PowerBI, O365)

What you need to know about the Belfast Tech Scene

If asked to name the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, you might not say Belfast. Similarly, if asked to name Europe's leading destination for foreign direct investment in new software development, Belfast might not come to mind. Yet, both are true. The city has emerged as a tech powerhouse, recently ranked among the best in the U.K. for tech careers — especially for software developers. It also leads the U.K. with the highest percentage of software development jobs advertised.
