fDi Intelligence Overview
fDi Intelligence is a major division of the Financial Times Ltd, specialising in all areas relating to foreign direct investment and investment promotion. We are the largest FDI Centre of Excellence globally. Our full suite of services include: location advertising to generate brand awareness; industry-leading tools to develop FDI strategies and identify potential investors; and tailored FDI events and investor roundtables to meet target companies and generate business leads.
fDi Benchmark is the only online tool to benchmark the competitiveness of countries and cities in over 65 sectors. Its comprehensive location data series covers the main cost and quality competitiveness indicators for over 900 locations around the world.
fDi Rankings is a series of rankings and awards conducted by fDi Intelligence, focusing on the future attractiveness of various locations for inward investment.
The Research Manager will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of producing fDi Benchmark and will also oversee the data collection for fDi Rankings. The successful candidate will work closely with the entire fDi Benchmark and fDi Rankings team and will report directly to the Operations Manager.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
People Management
Overall management and support of the fDi Benchmark & fDi Rankings research team.
- Provide training, support, and regular feedback to new research staff and existing team members.
- Set and review SMART objectives for the research team on a quarterly and annual basis.
- Work closely with the research team to ensure the highest quality data is entered into the database.
- Assist with the recruitment of new research staff.
Database Management
- Setting and managing the updated schedule for fDi Benchmark. Ensuring the database is maintained in an up-to-date, accurate, and consistent state.
- Reviewing data entered into the system to identify any potentially incorrect data etc.
- Work to improve information sources –identifying gaps where more information is needed in terms of sectors and countries and work to cover these areas.
- Ensure all files and folders are kept in an up-to-date, consistent, and easy-to-follow format.
- Manage any necessary license agreements with various data providers.
- Provide direction for the improvement and development of data points on the system in consultation with other stakeholders such as sales and the senior management team.
- Work closely with the development team on any related software development tasks and/or any issues.
- Maintain and update fDi Benchmark overview and data entry guide.
- Conduct ad hoc production tasks.
fDi Rankings data management
- Work with the Editorial team and Head of Research, fDi Rankings to determine the feasibility and availability of data for the development of new rankings.
- Oversee the completion of each ranking, ensuring that all data is collected on time.
Qualification, skills and experience:
Essential
- A degree in Economics, or Statistics, or a joint degree with a strong element of economics (2:1 or above).
- Well-developed research skills, with a minimum of 12 months experience working with economic or FDI-related data.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including a sound understanding of SUMIF, COUNTIF, and Vlookup functions.
- Strong critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to convey complex ideas to people with varying levels of economic expertise.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills with the ability to meet set targets.
- Proven high levels of accuracy and attention to detail and ability to review others' work.
- Proven ability to build productive working relationships and work within a team.
- Proven ability to use and work on own initiative.
- A genuine interest in economics and current affairs
Desirable
- Previous experience and/or an understanding of location benchmarking would be a strong advantage.
- Previous experience and/or an understanding of database management.
- Proven team leadership skills with evidence of team feedback.
