Shaping Ireland's Transport Future (Roads, Public Transport, and Greenways) 

Accelerate Your Career in Infrastructure 

AECOM's Surface Transportation Team in Ireland—a 150+ strong professional network operating across Belfast, Dublin, Cork and  Galway – is thriving due to significant growth led by a robust pipeline of major Roads, Public Transport and Greenways programmes. 

We are seeking a driven Principal Engineer (or similar Principal Infrastructure Engineer) to join our 150+ strong transportation team in Ireland. 

We welcome applications from those with a strong industry experience and the ambition to progress from their current role and lead the delivery of our national infrastructure projects. We can offer you the technical, commercial experience on projects and a structured development approach to shape you into an AECOM certified Project Manager that will lead our projects for our clients.

  • Roads: Major road schemes including the N25 Midleton to Youghal Transport Project (Co. Cork), N2 Rath to Kilmoon (Co. Meath), N3 M50 to Clonee, N4 Mullingar to Longford (Co. Westmeath and Co. Longford), N17 Milltown to Gortnagunned (Co. Galway), M21 Adare Bypass (Co. Limerick), M21 Adare to Attyflin, Carlow Southern Relief Road & Multi Modal Corridor (Co. Carlow), N54 Tullybryan Realignment (Co. Monaghan), A24 Ballynahinch Bypass (Co. Down), and Newry Southern Relief Road (Co. Down).
  • Public Transport: Delivery teams for the TII Luas Programme, the NTA BusConnects Programmes, NTA Bus Stop Design Team, and multiple major Irish rail projects.
  • Greenways: A vast programme of Greenways (>300km) in the Republic of Ireland for TII and Local Authorities, including major greenway schemes like Barnesmore Gap Greenway and Carrigans to Lifford Greenway in County Donegal, the West Cork Greenways – Skibbereen Sections, and the Galway-Oughterard Greenway.

Your Role & Responsibilities 

You will: 

  • Be ready to take the next step in your career, delivering and coordinating design packages on complex infrastructure programmes. 
  • Lead technical design teams on a diverse range of projects from concept to construction stage, including: 
  • Major transportation projects (to DMRB UK & Ireland Standards). 
  • Bus infrastructure projects (to LTN 1/24, NTA standards) 
  • Greenway/active travel projects (to Cycling by Design/TII DMRB). 
  • Deliver high quality deliverables and service to our clients, meeting our quality standards and their expectations within time and budget constraints. 
  • Work seamlessly within a multidisciplinary team, co-ordinating and challenging inputs from other disciplines (e.g., drainage, structures, environmental). 
  • Work directly with clients, local authorities, and stakeholders, guiding them through technical challenges and relevant statutory approval processes (Northern Ireland Roads Order, Republic of Ireland Planning Permission, Environmental Impact Assessment). 
  • Develop our team, through mentoring of junior engineers and apprentices, contributing to AECOM’s culture of growth and continuous learning. 
  • Help further expand our project portfolio through quality and commercial input to work winning.

Qualifications

Ready to push the limits of what’s possible? 

Here’s what we’re looking for

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering or similar. International applicants will hold an equivalent Degree recognised by the International Engineering Alliance (from a signatory of the Washington Accord).
  • Chartered Engineer, but we will consider strong candidates who demonstrate their progression toward Chartership soon. 
  • Significant post-graduate experience in relevant areas such as civil engineering, highways, rail, light rail, public transport, or greenways/active travel. With an increasing portfolio of work in green energy transition, we would also welcome candidates with experience in the design and delivery of substation infrastructure and high voltage cable routes. 
  • Solid understanding of, and experience in, the use of relevant design standards in the UK and Ireland applicable to our projects (e.g. the TII PMG and PMM processes and TII Standards, DMRB, DMURS, LTN 1/20, LTN 1/24, NTA Cycle Design Manual). 
  • Solid understanding of, and experience in, the preparation of contract documentation for major transport projects, including typical forms of contract (NEC/Public Works Contract) and associated Specifications to MCHW/MCRW. 
  • Experience with statutory planning and design approvals in the UK and/or Ireland, including supporting the preparation of environmental impact assessments for projects. 
  • Ability to manage and lead teams of varying sizes and capabilities. 
  • Experience in the commercial management of tasks and/or projects.
