The role involves supporting the Electrical Engineering function, managing work packages, assisting in outages and improvements, and gaining exposure to power systems and high-voltage engineering.
An opportunity has arisen to recruit an Engineering Graduate (Electrical) on a 2-year fixed-term development programme within the NI Engineering team. The role will be site-based across Kilroot and Ballylumford Power Stations, with occasional travel to our other sites or supplier locations as required.
This programme is specifically designed for recent graduates at the start of their engineering career, providing structured development within a large-scale power generation environment.
The successful candidate will primarily support the Electrical Engineering function, while also gaining exposure to Control & Instrumentation (C&I) systems as part of a broader development pathway.
Role Overview
You will work alongside experienced engineers supporting outages, plant improvements, and reliability-focused projects across both sites. This is a hands-on, site-based role, requiring a strong presence on plant and close collaboration with operations, maintenance, and contractors.
You will gain direct exposure to high-voltage systems up to 275kV, complex plant systems, and real-time operational challenges within a flexible generation environment.
Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the Lead Engineer (Electrical), the key deliverables require the graduate to:
- Supporting the preparation and execution of work scopes for planned and unplanned outages.
- Assisting in the delivery of electrical engineering improvement projects.
- Managing defined work packages under supervision, including coordination of contractors.
- Developing and maintaining criticality assessments for electrical and plant systems.
- Reviewing spares strategies, considering obsolescence and lifecycle management.
- Supporting compliance with statutory and internal requirements (e.g. DSEAR, MOC, engineering standards).
- Assisting with fault finding, investigations and root cause analysis.
- Supporting testing, commissioning, and return-to-service activities on electrical systems.
Development Opportunities
This programme is structured to provide practical experience and development in:
- Electrical systems within a large thermal power generation plant.
- Exposure to high-voltage infrastructure (up to 275kV substations).
- Outage planning and execution.
- Plant reliability and RCM-based maintenance strategies.
- Distributed Control System (DCS) logic and plant control philosophies.
- Data analysis and performance monitoring.
- Contractor management and site-based project delivery.
- Technical investigations and process safety.
- Building experience towards professional accreditation (IET/Chartered status).
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
This development programme is designed for early-career graduates and is not intended for fully qualified or experienced engineers seeking lateral entry into the organisation.

What you need to know about the Belfast Tech Scene
If asked to name the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, you might not say Belfast. Similarly, if asked to name Europe's leading destination for foreign direct investment in new software development, Belfast might not come to mind. Yet, both are true. The city has emerged as a tech powerhouse, recently ranked among the best in the U.K. for tech careers — especially for software developers. It also leads the U.K. with the highest percentage of software development jobs advertised.
