Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

At Westpac New Zealand, our Technology team plays a critical role in creating better futures together.

As a Network Engineer, you will be part of the Core Infrastructure function, responsible for the design, delivery and ongoing support of complex enterprise network platforms. This role supports core banking and technology services through secure, resilient and scalable network solutions across data centre and wider network environments.

You will provide technical leadership across predominantly Cisco routing, switching and wireless platforms, DDI and SD-WAN technology, as well as 802.1X security architecture, while partnering closely with squads, project teams and stakeholders across the bank. Your work will directly contribute to platform stability, continuous improvement, disaster recovery readiness and strong risk management outcomes.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide third level technical support and lead root cause analysis for major incidents.

  • Act as a support for Cisco routing and switching, and software defined networking

  • Partner with squads to provide guidance on network design and deployment options.

  • Plan, review and implement network changes in line with change management processes.

  • Support business continuity and disaster recovery planning, testing and documentation.

  • Identify and proactively manage risks, working closely with Technology Risk Services.

  • Continuously improve network resilience, performance and operational processes.

  • Maintain high quality technical documentation and design artefacts.

  • Collaborate with project managers and third-party vendors to deliver complex technical outcomes.

Nā tāu rourou | What will you bring?

To be successful in this role, you will bring:

  • A minimum of 3-5 years' experience in enterprise network engineering roles.

  • Strong expertise in Cisco routing and switching with professional level expertise.

  • Solid knowledge of VXLAN, EVPN, VPC, BGP and OSPF.

  • Proven security expertise relating to NAC and 802.1X.

  • Strong knowledge on automation like Ansible playbooks (Preferred).

  • Proven experience working on Datacentre networks especially Nexus Spine/Leaf.

  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex network issues using advanced diagnostic techniques.

  • Experience working within structured change, incident and problem management frameworks.

  • Strong documentation and design skills with the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly.

  • Experience working collaboratively with project managers, engineers and external vendors.

  • Experience in Wireless and SD-WAN would be an advantage.

  • A proactive approach to risk identification, control management and continuous improvement.

  • Experience in providing secure connectivity towards 3rd parties and cloud providers would be beneficial. 

  • Alignment with Westpac values and a strong customer and outcomes focus.

Exposure to automation, DevOps practices or tools such as Python, REST APIs, Ansible or Terraform would be an advantage.
