The role & impact
This role is essential to ensuring that the products Xero builds comply with local government regulations in New Zealand. You will play an integral part in directly contributing to our vision of being the most insightful and trusted small business platform by supporting the business to ensure products meet standards for accounting, tax, payroll, and cyber security.
You will define and execute the operating model and risk frameworks used to review products against current and proposed legislation. By reviewing future features with a one-to-three-year outlook, you will ensure our long-term roadmap aligns with regulatory requirements while acting as a key representative for Xero with government agencies and professional bodies.
The team & how they connect
You will be an active member of an internal community of regulatory and product subject matter experts who support and challenge each other to build excellence. The team works closely with stakeholders across Product, Technology, Go-To-Market, and Legal to translate complex technical detail into actionable requirements. While your focus is in-region, you will regularly collaborate with globally dispersed colleagues to share knowledge and maintain high standards across all markets.
The team is currently working on / Initially, you will focus on
Establishing strong communication channels and technical working groups with Inland Revenue and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
Developing the regulatory risk map and related timelines to support key strategic priorities.
Translating complex technical regulatory detail into natural English for product and technology leadership teams.
Collaborating with M&A teams to provide awareness of regulatory requirements that may impact new proposals.
Where and how you can work
Xero supports a variety of ways of working, offering a mix of office-based and remote flexibility. Our New Zealand offices provide collaborative spaces for "boost days" where teams come together to connect and innovate in person. As this role involves working with global teams, there is an expectation of occasional flexibility to accommodate meetings across different time zones.
Here are some of the things we are looking for
You bring a specialist understanding of New Zealand regulatory requirements surrounding income tax, GST, and payroll.
A background in Accounting coming from public practice or working collaboratively with revenue agencies helps you navigate complex compliance landscapes.
You hold a degree in a relevant field such as Law, Accounting, or Taxation and maintain a membership with a professional body.
Your exceptional communication skills allow you to interpret and evaluate intricate legislation for diverse technical and non-technical audiences.
You possess a strong results-oriented attitude and the ability to ruthlessly prioritise projects in a fast-paced environment.
Experience with risk assessments and contributing to product roadmaps would be a significant advantage in this role.
