What do we do?

Paddle offers SaaS companies a completely different approach to their payments infrastructure. Instead of assembling and maintaining a complex stack of payments-related apps and services, we’re a Merchant of Record for our customers. That means we take away 100% of the pain of payments fragmentation. It’s faster, safer, cheaper, and, above all, way better.

We’re backed by investors including KKR, FTV Capital, Kindred, Notion, and 83North and serve over 5000 software sellers in 245 territories globally.

The Role:

As Legal Counsel, you will be a member of the Paddle Legal and Compliance team, reporting directly to Paddle’s Senior Legal Counsel. The Paddle legal team is well-respected and integrated into Paddle’s business. As a result, this role will require you to collaborate with other teams across the business, and advise cross-functionally, always with a view to empowering the business to achieve its goals while taking a long-term strategic view.

All members of the Legal team assist across various areas and teams at Paddle. The role itself will be broad and varied, with a regulatory and commercial focus. You will be delivering first-rate legal advice in a fast-paced dynamic environment, identifying risk and applying a proactive problem-solving mindset with your legal expertise. You will be an excellent generalist, comfortable operating in areas of ambiguity.

As Legal Counsel, you will consider the longer-term impacts whilst also being able to react quickly to deliver level-headed, creative and context-appropriate solutions to ensure the best possible customer experience in the ever changing tech space.

The role will be based in the UK or Canada but will be global in scope.

What you'll do:

You will support the Senior Legal Counsel in their duties and advise and partner with every team from across the business on a wide range of matters, including the following:

  • Commercial work:

    • You are highly independent and will lead the negotiation of bespoke customer agreements, third-party supplier contracts, and other commercial agreements.

    • You will maintain and improve contract templates and checklists, work with the commercial team to optimise the contracting process and promote automation and self-service and collaborate.

    • You will own the contract lifecycle management strategy and collaborate with other teams across Paddle to map key contractual obligations into business processes and controls.

  • Regulatory advice:

    • You will lead on the identification, interpretation and analysis of evolving regulations across the consumer, financial services, digital services, AI and fintech sectors relevant to Paddle’s global MoR business model.

    • You will collaborate with the Compliance function to counsel on regulatory issues and legal requirements across various projects, as well as develop and implement policies and procedures relevant to Paddle’s operations and the MoR business mode.

  • Optional:

    • Corporate: You will manage regulatory filings and registration requirements across the various Paddle entities.

    • Data protection: You will assist the Data Protection Officer in implementing the global data protection programme, providing data protection advice and ensuring both the documentation and proper controls are in place and effectively monitored.

    • Incidents and Disputes: You will support colleagues in resolving legal or pre-litigation disputes by applying your legal skills and thorough understanding of contractual commitments with a view towards a favourable resolution and de-escalation.

We'd love to hear from you if:

  • You are a mid-level legal counsel with around 4 years of legal experience, about 2 years of which were as an in-house lawyer at a regulated high-growth tech scale-up preferably in consumer, FinTech, SaaS or related sectors. You have worked extensively with consumer protection, content, financial services, AI, technology, and data regulations.

  • You are preferably qualified in the UK, US or Canada or otherwise qualified in another common law or European jurisdiction.

  • You are smart, curious, keen to learn and have a proven ability to quickly understand new and complex legal concepts, and apply them with a commercial, practical and creative mindset to Paddle’s business.

  • You are energetic and have a problem-solving mindset, used to working from first principles and excited about answering questions you have never dealt with before, while being meticulous and detail-oriented.

  • You are an excellent and persuasive communicator, able to tailor your advice to the recipient and used to partnering with a range of stakeholders across the business and externally.

  • You thrive in a dynamic environment, able to provide strategic and tactical solutions in a rapidly growing business.

What you need to know about the Belfast Tech Scene

If asked to name the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, you might not say Belfast. Similarly, if asked to name Europe's leading destination for foreign direct investment in new software development, Belfast might not come to mind. Yet, both are true. The city has emerged as a tech powerhouse, recently ranked among the best in the U.K. for tech careers — especially for software developers. It also leads the U.K. with the highest percentage of software development jobs advertised.
