Help us use technology to make a big green dent in the universe!

Kraken powers some of the most innovative global developments in energy.

We’re a technology company focused on creating a smart, sustainable energy system. From optimising renewable generation, creating a more intelligent grid and enabling utilities to provide excellent customer experiences, our operating system for energy is transforming the industry around the world in a way that benefits everyone.

It’s a really exciting time in energy. Help us make a real impact on shaping a better, more sustainable future.

Kraken Customer

What we do: build the most AI-driven, innovative, forward-thinking platform for energy management. From optimising resources to delivering cost-effective, exceptional customer experiences through advanced Customer Information Systems (CIS), billing, meter data management, CRM, and AI-driven communications, Kraken is powering the next wave of innovation in the energy industry.

Why we do it: future energy will not look like energy as we know it today. We need to not just think about our future, but build for it. Now.

Our team

All technology is written and maintained by a multi-discipline engineering team of around 1500 people globally. Our engineers work in ‘super teams’ which are focused on key areas of our platform as well as other innovative products. This also includes server-side, client-side and mobile engineers working closely with UX experts, copywriters and designers.

Teams are empowered to choose a way of working that works for them, often opting for a Kanban-like approach. Notion and Asana are then used to specify and manage work; Github, CircleCI and Terraform Enterprise as part of an immutable-infrastructure, continuous delivery pipeline; and Datadog, Sentry and Cloudwatch to measure performance and monitor production.

You'll be joining to build and lead a team of five to seven engineers on the UK settlement team, a sub team of the wider UK markets team.

Your main focus will be on the electricity and gas industry in the UK market, currently the teams are working on the MHHS project, one of the largest changes to the electricity industry since the introduction of electricity market competition in the late 1990s and is key to a more flexible energy system.

As a Lead Engineer, you will be leading your team as a technical leader and will have management responsibilities of your team of engineers. Work will be focused on support of UK-based clients and the UK market.

Together with the rest of the team, you will bring the same revolutionary customer experience, operational excellence and speed of innovation that Kraken is powering across energy retailers to other sectors.

Some of our coding conventions are open-source.

Kraken is a great place to learn, work with some talented engineers and level-up your skills.

Our technology

On the server-side, we mainly use Python. Most of our websites are powered by Django and GraphQL (Graphene).

Client-side, we use React, Next.js, Typescript, htmx and SASS; our mobile apps are built using native code or React Native.

We use AWS heavily as part of a continuous deployment pipeline. See, for example, Django, ELB health checks and continuous delivery.

What you'll have...

  • We’re looking for someone with a general interest in technology and problem-solving; someone diligent and thoughtful
  • Your level will be Senior Software Engineer or above and we expect you to have experience/expertise in the following (in rough priority order):
  • Python and Django (or equivalent web framework) web development experience, as you will be asked to work on some full-stack projects
  • Domain modelling, and ability to quickly absorb information about a complex industry
  • HTTP and REST APIs
  • Writing robust and fault-tolerant software
  • Celery and async processing
  • Postgres
  • Experience being a technical leader in a team

What you'll do...

  • You’ll be responsible for leading a team of engineers, making decisions on how the team operates and setting the technical direction of the team.
  • This role will involve line management duties, as well as being hands on and close to the code.
  • You’ll be responsible for ensuring the quality of the code being delivered through thoughtful code review.
  • Your team will be building and maintaining the backend systems and support site for UK-based clients to support their electricity and gas operations.
  • You will gain a deep understanding of the inner workings of how the UK energy market operates and help shape our systems to improve them for our clients with a product mindset.
  • Work with other market teams, primarily the UK market teams to support their operations.
  • Work with client delivery to help prioritize, deliver and maintain work required by clients.
  • Be responsible for monitoring and alerting of production systems and where required, lead and manage incidents.
  • Help mentor, guide your team.

What we're looking for...

  • We’re after someone who’s passionate about code, curious, and eager to learn. You’ll be solving problems with technology to help make us, and the industry, smarter and better for customers.
  • You'll be part of a talented tech team, working on meaningful solutions to real-world problems in an industry that needs innovation, care, and efficiency.

We're very excited to be growing our team. We're looking for skills and experience to help shape and define the future of not only our team, but the wider business at a global scale. If you're reading this and grinning, please apply! There are huge challenges to tackle, and we need amazing people who are keen to get stuck in.
If this sounds like you then we'd love to hear from you.

What you need to know about the Belfast Tech Scene

If asked to name the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, you might not say Belfast. Similarly, if asked to name Europe's leading destination for foreign direct investment in new software development, Belfast might not come to mind. Yet, both are true. The city has emerged as a tech powerhouse, recently ranked among the best in the U.K. for tech careers — especially for software developers. It also leads the U.K. with the highest percentage of software development jobs advertised.
