About your team:

At Centrica we live by our Purpose – ‘energising a greener, fairer future’ – because we believe in energy that works for colleagues, customers and communities, today and into the future. It’s why we exist. Delivering the energy needed today and the energy security, efficiency and decarbonisation solutions of the future.

As we look to the future, Centrica has a crucial role in the energy transition, we’ve committed to investing £4bn to 2028 in renewable generation, security of supply, and our customers. In doing so, we can add value for customers, colleagues, communities and shareholders alike.

About your role:

We’re looking for a talented Head of Press Office to lead on our reactive communications to protect Centrica reputation, taking a strategic and proactive approach to any opportunities that may arise, as well as building strong relationships with key journalists and media outlets. Reporting to the Strategic Communications Director, this is an important role, as you’ll be primarily responsible for advising senior leaders across the business on issues and crisis management during high-risk events. Additionally, you’ll be working closely with the Head of Corporate Comms to support on the corporate calendar.

This is a high-impact role for someone with a deep understanding of the media landscape, outstanding communication and influencing skills, and the ability to react to issues at speed with accuracy but also proactively help develop and execute external strategies that advance both our business objectives and reputation at the highest levels.

Location: This role is primarily based in Windsor, with at least 2 days in the office. Some travel to London and other Centrica sites as required.

What will you be doing?

  • Accountability for managing high-risk reputational issues and ensuring the smooth-running of 24/7 Centrica press office which covers all brands including British Gas

  • Managing the company news flow, therefore ensuring effective 24-hour monitoring - including social media - is key to horizon scanning for emerging risks, themes and opportunities

  • Proactively communicating internally when issues are identified and outlining a plan to mitigate risks or contain them while maximising opportunities for the business

  • Maintaining strong relationships to ensure consistent external narrative with media and stakeholders and to ensure Centrica’s priorities and positions on issues are well understood

  • Working across the full matrix of the organisation to mitigate risks, considering implications of issues in all areas – regulatory, legal, commercial, marketing, cyber security, investor and colleague impact

  • Leading on handling live reactive issues and crisis management, including planning and preparation

  • Collaborating closely with the wider Corporate Affairs and Communications team to ensure alignment and integrated plans that deliver against Centrica’s strategic and business priorities

  • Effectively managing a Press Officer and the out of hours rota and escalation process

  • Managing media analysis and evaluation and submitting sentiment insights to inform strategy

  • Develop and deliver clear proactive communications to tell our corporate story - identifying opportunities for thought leadership - and supporting on the financial calendar when required

Here's what we’re looking for:

  • A self-starter with a proven track record as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, with sharp judgment and insight to help navigate complex external and reputational challenges

  • Strong understanding of the UK media landscape and how digital and social media influence reputation and brand. Has key national media contacts that they regularly engage with

  • A critical thinker with an eye for detail - able to scan the horizon, assess risk from all angles, and anticipate potential reputational issues before they emerge

  • Excellent media management skills, with a collaborative mindset and the ability to build effective relationships internally and externally

  • Team player - aligning with the Public Affairs, Digital, Internal comms, and Responsible Business teams that sit with the Corporate Affairs and Communications function

  • Ability to work across functions to create and deliver solutions that support Group-wide goals and long-term business success

  • Extensive experience in delivering high-impact external communications across multiple channels—including media, digital, and social - and confidently leading teams across all platforms.

  • Proven experience in planning for crisis situations and effective handling strategies.

  • Digitally savvy, resilient, and agile - comfortable operating in a fast-moving highly-regulated environment with constant political and media attention and scrutiny.

  • Commercial acumen with the ability to align media strategy with long-term business goals, including legislative and regulatory change.

  • Solid understanding of the energy and services sector - or another highly regulated environment - with knowledge of the corporate and consumer landscape we operate in.

  • Experience of operating in a business environment with a strong trade union presence.

  • Educated to degree level

  • Can travel at short notice to London and our various sites if required

What you need to know about the Belfast Tech Scene

If asked to name the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, you might not say Belfast. Similarly, if asked to name Europe's leading destination for foreign direct investment in new software development, Belfast might not come to mind. Yet, both are true. The city has emerged as a tech powerhouse, recently ranked among the best in the U.K. for tech careers — especially for software developers. It also leads the U.K. with the highest percentage of software development jobs advertised.
