Full-time, Permanent Role

Based in Britomart, Auckland

Westpac Institutional Bank is one of New Zealand's leading providers of specialised financial services and solutions to institutional and public sector customers operating across New Zealand, Australia, Asia, Europe and the US, and to Westpac New Zealand's business and consumer customers. Shape the future of Institutional Banking and lead a high‑performing team to deliver exceptional customer and commercial outcomes.

Mō te tūranga | About the role

As our Head of Institutional Relationships, you will play a pivotal leadership role within IBB — guiding the strategy, culture, and performance of our Institutional customer portfolios across key sectors. You will:

  • Lead long‑term customer engagement and channel strategies that elevate the banking experience for Institutional clients, ensuring we remain agile to changing customer needs and market forces.

  • Drive innovation in service delivery and help shape products and solutions that meet market needs and strengthen our competitive advantage.

  • Build the bank’s brand and market reputation through strong strategic leadership, industry engagement, and a relentless focus on customer outcomes.

  • Grow revenues, manage costs, and guide your teams to deliver strong financial and non‑financial outcomes.

  • Proactively driving response to emerging risks and opportunities facing our Institutional customers

  • Attract, develop, and empower diverse, high‑performing teams — fostering a collaborative, inclusive culture where people thrive and perspectives are valued.

  • Lead organisational transformation by embedding learning mindsets, continuous improvement, and future‑focused capability.

  • Maintain strong external networks to stay ahead of industry developments and position Westpac as a trusted, innovative Institutional banking partner.

  • Provide clear reporting to the WNZL CRO, Executive Committee, Board, and relevant Committees on performance, governance, and risk.

  • Uphold a strong, embedded risk culture that optimises decision‑making, ensures compliance with legislation, and demonstrates the highest ethical standards.

Nā tāu rourou | What will you bring?

You will bring deep expertise in Institutional banking or adjacent financial services, supported by a strong understanding of commercial drivers across industries. Your extensive knowledge of balance sheet management, debt, credit, and credit risk enables you to identify opportunities and mobilise large teams to deliver at scale.

You have a proven track record of leading cultural and organisational transformation, underpinned by more than a decade of leadership experience within large, complex environments. You pair a strategic mindset with the capability to translate vision into actionable, measurable outcomes, and your leadership style is inclusive, empowering, and centred on people.

You demonstrate a strong commitment to equity, sustainability, and responsible banking practices, and you bring a genuine passion for strengthening customer relationships, influencing across a complex stakeholder landscape, and inspiring teams to deliver exceptional performance.

What you need to know about the Belfast Tech Scene

If asked to name the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, you might not say Belfast. Similarly, if asked to name Europe's leading destination for foreign direct investment in new software development, Belfast might not come to mind. Yet, both are true. The city has emerged as a tech powerhouse, recently ranked among the best in the U.K. for tech careers — especially for software developers. It also leads the U.K. with the highest percentage of software development jobs advertised.
