Summary:
This position is responsible for the entire operation of The Estes Park Trail Gazette and its niche products (print & digital), from the initial concept to the final published edition. The Estes Park team is small and mightly (one reporter and one sales consultant). In this role, you serve as editor and sales manager and are responsible for writing and selling, posting content online, curating daily headline emails and building the print editions.
You will effectively manage and direct all activities for the property to maximize revenue, conserve expenses, achieve profit directives, and grow audiences in print and digital platforms. You will be responsible for quality publications while consistently meeting established deadlines and performance standards. Manage content, production, circulation, advertising sales, and analyze monthly financial statements of property performance. Provide supervision of employees, focus on employee morale and relations, and manage any disciplinary processes. Works in a coordinated manner with Prairie Mountain Media and MediaNews Group management and other support departments.
What you will do:

  • Serve as a thought-leader in the community(ies) covered and represent the brand with local government, business community, non-profit organizations and all constituents
  • Effective hiring, promotion, termination, and disciplinary action of assigned personnel in coordination with human resources and management
  • Manage work schedules and ensure employee needs are met
  • Develop key performance goals, coach and evaluate staff performance
  • Create a culture of communication and teamwork within the property managed and with PMM and Denver support teams
  • Responsible for ensuring accurate payroll for the property and monthly expenses, including timely payments for contractors, freelancers, and other vendors
  • Ensure the staff provides quality customer service
  • Improve internal processes for better productivity
  • Work with management to develop and implement strategies to drive more audience, circulation, and advertising revenue (print and digital)
  • Lead the charge by assigning, writing, and editing compelling stories, ensuring accuracy and adherence to journalistic standards
  • Take charge of news budgets, optimizing resources for effective coverage
  • Dive into local reporting, contributing to the stories in the Estes community


What you will bring:

  • Strong sales skills and Excel and Google Docs knowledge (Intermediate or Advanced)
  • Journalism experience, AP style knowledge and the ability to quickly compile accurate reporting on a variety of topics; spelling and grammar skills required
  • 2-5 years of experience working in a daily newspaper, or previous relevant experience managing a small media company or having been in a leadership role
  • Excellent leadership, goal setting, motivation, training, and mentorship skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, including writing, speaking, and active listening
  • Ability to understand and analyze monthly financial statements and property performance
  • Effective conflict resolution and problem-solving skills as well as organizational and time management skills
  • Bachelor's Degree in sales or communications field preferred; equivalent experience will be considered


Travel

  • Daily throughout the Estes Park market


The annual salary range is $58,000 - $62,000. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. This role is eligible for a bonus based on performance. In addition to your salary, MediaNews Group offers a comprehensive benefits package, and a 401K plan (all benefits are based on eligibility).
