Location: Belfast / Hybrid
Service Line: Tax | Global Mobility / Employer Solutions
Grade: Manager
The opportunity
We are looking for an experienced Global Mobility Tax Manager to join our growing team and play a key role in developing and delivering our global mobility offering.
This is a broad role combining technical advisory, expatriate tax compliance, cross-border payroll and social security, client relationship management and team leadership. The successful candidate will work with businesses ranging from growing internationally active organisations to large multinational groups, helping them manage increasingly complex cross-border workforces.
The role provides an opportunity to manage a portfolio of clients, take ownership of complex mobility assignments and work closely with colleagues and overseas member firms across tax, payroll, social security, immigration and employment tax.
Main responsibilities
Global mobility tax advisory
You will work with senior colleagues to advise employers and internationally mobile individuals on the tax consequences of cross-border working arrangements, including:
- UK tax residence and the Statutory Residence Test, split-year treatment and treaty residence;
- application of double taxation agreements and employment income articles;
- inbound and outbound assignments, secondments and international transfers;
- short-term business visitors and frequent business travellers;
- permanent transfers and locally hired internationally mobile employees;
- remote and hybrid cross-border working arrangements;
- employer and employee tax obligations arising from international working;
- interaction between personal tax, payroll, employment tax and mobility arrangements.
PAYE, payroll and social security
You will help clients determine and practically implement their payroll and social security obligations, including:
- PAYE obligations for internationally mobile employees;
- short-term business visitor arrangements and Appendix 4 requirements;
- modified expatriate and shadow payroll arrangements;
- National Insurance and overseas social security obligations;
- A1 certificates and Certificates of Coverage;
- application of UK/EU and bilateral social security agreements;
- multi-state workers and cross-border commuters; and
- coordination with overseas payroll and tax advisers.
Compliance delivery
You will take responsibility for high-quality delivery across a portfolio of globally mobile employees and employer clients, including:
- reviewing UK Self Assessment tax returns and assignment-related calculations and tax reconciliations for internationally mobile individuals;
- managing arrival and departure processes;
- reviewing payroll and year-end mobility reporting;
- coordinating overseas tax compliance with international colleagues;
- managing HMRC correspondence and enquiries; and
- ensuring engagements meet the firm's risk management and quality standards.
Client and portfolio management
As a Manager, you will have genuine ownership of client relationships and delivery. You will:
- act as a primary day-to-day contact for key mobility clients;
- manage a portfolio of corporate clients and internationally mobile employees;
- translate complex tax rules into clear, practical advice for HR, payroll, finance, tax and individual employees;
- manage engagement delivery, budgets and billing, working with senior colleagues to monitor scope and recoverability;
- identify emerging risks and opportunities across client mobility programmes;
- coordinate multi-country assignments through the international network; and
- build trusted relationships with client stakeholders and internationally mobile executives.
People and leadership
You will play an active role in developing the team and improving how we deliver our work. This will include:
- supporting, coaching, and developing junior colleagues;
- reviewing technical and compliance work;
- allocating and managing work across the team;
- supporting the technical development of Associates and Assistant Managers;
- helping create efficient, technology-enabled approaches to mobility compliance.
Business development and growth
This is not intended to be a purely compliance-management role. As a Manager, you will also have opportunities to contribute to the continued growth and development of our Global Mobility practice.
You will be expected to:
- identify additional advisory opportunities within existing clients;
- contribute to proposals, tenders and pitches for new global mobility work;
- support the development of new mobility propositions and service offerings;
- build relationships across the wider tax and advisory solution groups to generate referrals;
- contribute to client seminars and technical updates; and
- develop relationships with colleagues across the international network.
What we are looking for
Essential experience
We are interested in hearing from candidates with a strong background in global mobility, expatriate tax or a closely related area. We recognise that candidates may have developed different areas of specialism and do not expect applicants to have identical experience across every aspect of the role.
The successful candidate is likely to have:
- strong UK expatriate tax and/or global mobility experience, ideally gained within a professional services environment;
- practical experience of managing internationally mobile employee populations;
- good knowledge of UK individual income tax and an understanding of PAYE issues affecting internationally mobile employees;
- experience of both mobility advisory and compliance
- good working knowledge of double tax treaties and cross-border employment income issues;
- understanding of international social security principles;
- experience reviewing complex individual tax returns and mobility calculations;
- ability to manage multiple clients, deadlines and workstreams simultaneously;
- experience managing or coaching junior team members; and
- confidence communicating directly with senior client stakeholders.
Qualifications
A relevant professional qualification, such as CTA, ATT, ACA, ACCA or equivalent, would be advantageous but is not essential where a candidate can demonstrate strong relevant global mobility experience.
The person
We are looking for someone who is:
- Technically curious and able to turn complex tax rules into practical advice.
- Client focused, with the confidence to build strong relationships with HR, Reward, Payroll, Tax and Finance stakeholders.
- Organised and comfortable managing competing advisory and compliance deadlines.
- Collaborative, with an interest in working across employment tax, payroll, corporate tax, reward and immigration teams and with international colleagues.
- A supportive people manager who enjoys coaching others and contributing to the development of the wider team.
