About this role

The Global Equity team is responsible for managing extensive pooled and segregated accounts. The team uses bottom-up, team-based, fundamental research to deliver concentrated global portfolios. The team consists of experienced investors supported by product strategists and core portfolio managers within the larger active equity platform.

We are seeking a global Healthcare analyst to work within the Global Equity team at the VP/Director level, based on experience to supplement our existing stock research capabilities. The team are long-term investors, focused on identifying quality healthcare companies at attractive valuations. This is an opportunity to develop as an Investor – whilst we would value prior experience in Healthcare, the successful candidate will be asked in role to seek opportunities across the Healthcare space (e.g. Pharma, Medical Devices, Managed Care) and contribute to broader team investment debate.

This position is a compelling opportunity for a research analyst with demonstrable skills in fundamental research, financial analysis, and knowledge of healthcare business models. The analyst we seek will have an appreciation for investing with a strong focus on fundamentally driven returns over longer time horizons. Working closely with other members of the team and the wider firm, this individual will conduct detailed fundamental research, make recommendations for inclusion of stocks into multiple strategies, as well as closely monitor those companies while they are held in the funds.

The analyst will need to conduct independent research; they will be based in London but should be prepared to travel at times to attend company meetings, trade shows, and conferences as required.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct fundamental research globally, including corporate financial analysis, meeting with management, industry analysis, attending conferences, and interacting with BlackRock equity teams.
  • Generate long-term, high conviction investment ideas for concentrated portfolios with a particular focus on strong business models, compounding returns, and reliable cash flows.
  • Contribute to the team’s discussions of individual ideas, setting conviction within the wider research group, and thereby impacting portfolio strategies.
Development Value
  • This is a growing investment team with a number of separate products – this role will allow the analyst to contribute to multiple strategies.
  • The analyst will also be expected to collaborate in BlackRock wide initiatives, including those within Fundamental Active Equity (e.g., Global industry groups, leveraging Aladdin Research tools) and the wider Investment Platform (e.g., Blackrock Investment Institute).
Knowledge/Experience
  • Understanding of fundamental equity research and financial analysis.
  • Sell-side research or buy-side / fund management experience required ideally with prior healthcare/pharma coverage.
  • Demonstration of ability as an independent researcher and stock picker who is prepared to think differently to the shorter-term consensus and focus on long term drivers of return.
  • Global healthcare or pharma sector experience is required.
Skills/Qualifications
  • Basic financial modeling ability with required skills in Excel, plus preferred ability to use Bloomberg and Tableau or other data modeling tools.
  • Good communication skills.
  • University degree required; CFA or equivalent qualification preferred.
  • Original and independent thinker, able to work in a fast-paced team environment.
Competencies
  • Experience of fundamental research, with skills around healthcare sector and company analysis.
  • Skills to include comparison of both corporate business models and share prices over the long term.
  • An understanding of all financial statements, the key drivers of shareholder return, and multiple valuation techniques, including DCFs.
  • Strong business sense: the candidate must possess an understanding of business models, industry dynamics, and competitive analysis.
  • Independent thinking coupled with a proven ability to work with - and make an impact in - an established team.
  • The ability to clearly articulate high conviction, well-thought-out, and supported investment ideas in both large and small group settings.
  • The candidate must also demonstrate the ability to work more broadly within an organization where information-sharing is critical to the success of all teams across asset classes.

What you need to know about the Belfast Tech Scene

If asked to name the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, you might not say Belfast. Similarly, if asked to name Europe's leading destination for foreign direct investment in new software development, Belfast might not come to mind. Yet, both are true. The city has emerged as a tech powerhouse, recently ranked among the best in the U.K. for tech careers — especially for software developers. It also leads the U.K. with the highest percentage of software development jobs advertised.
