The Role

At Proofpoint, we are amid an exciting transformation, migrating our applications from traditional on-premises data centers to a cloud-native, Kubernetes-based infrastructure. As a DevOps Tools Engineer, you will play a key role in designing and executing this migration strategy across AWS, GCP, and Azure, with a strong emphasis on Azure AKS. You will be responsible for building scalable, resilient, and secure platforms, enabling our teams to deploy, operate, and manage applications seamlessly in a multi-cloud environment.

You will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure a smooth transition to Kubernetes and implement best practices. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys tackling challenges in hybrid cloud environments and wants to impact our cloud strategy significantly.

Your Day to Day

  • Design highly available and robust Infrastructure services that increase the productivity of SRE and Engineering teams.

  • Integrate industry-standard CNCF projects into the Proofpoint ecosystem.

  • Interact with SRE/Engineering teams to understand requirements and drive solutions.

  • Work in a dynamic environment and respond to interruptions promptly.

  • Provide L2 support for Infrastructure services running in production.

  • Provide mentoring to others within the team and the larger Ops org.

What You Bring to the Team

  • Cloud Expertise: Proven experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure, including significant experience with Azure AKS and Kubernetes-based migrations.

  • Infrastructure as Code and Automation Skills: Proficiency with Terraform, Helm, and scripting languages (Python, Bash, or Go) for automated infrastructure management and configuration.

  • DevOps and CI/CD Experience: Expertise in building CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, Jenkins, and Argo CD for efficient application deployment and updates during migration.

  • Monitoring and Observability: Proven experience with observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and OpenTelemetry for comprehensive monitoring and logging.

  • Proactive and Independent: A self-starter who can take ownership of projects, drive initiatives independently, and adapt quickly to changing requirements.

  • Soft Skills: Excellent problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the ability to work effectively across teams and functions.

Nice to have

  • Security Expertise: Knowledge of cloud security tools and practices, including Trivy or Snyk.

  • Experience with Multi-Cloud Abstraction: Knowledge of tools like Crossplane, Rancher, or Cluster API for creating a unified abstraction layer over AWS, GKE, and AKS. Experience in building standardized interfaces for managing Kubernetes resources across multiple cloud providers is a plus.

  • Kubernetes Mastery: In-depth understanding of Kubernetes, including Helm charts, Kubectl, CRDs, Ingress Controllers (e.g., NGINX), and Service Mesh (e.g., Istio, Linkerd)

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or related field.

What you need to know about the Belfast Tech Scene

If asked to name the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, you might not say Belfast. Similarly, if asked to name Europe's leading destination for foreign direct investment in new software development, Belfast might not come to mind. Yet, both are true. The city has emerged as a tech powerhouse, recently ranked among the best in the U.K. for tech careers — especially for software developers. It also leads the U.K. with the highest percentage of software development jobs advertised.
