Role Profile
We are seeking a DevOps Engineering Lead to lead our DevOps function across a globally distributed team. This is a hands-on position: you will contribute directly to platform reliability, security and delivery while line-managing DevOps engineers and co-ordinating external contractors/partner resources. You will modernise our tooling and infrastructure, drive automation and cost optimisation on AWS, and engage directly with AWS technical contacts to validate designs and adopt best practice.
The successful candidate will work within a high-performing technology group responsible for maintaining and evolving our technical platforms, diagnosing and remediating faults, and ensuring the security of the Lloyd’s List Intelligence estate.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and People Management
- Line-manage DevOps engineers (objective setting, coaching, performance reviews, career development).
- Day-to-day direction, prioritisation and quality oversight of external contractors and partner teams.
- Build an inclusive, collaborative culture across geographies and organisations with consistent ways of working.
- Workforce planning with the Head of Online Development (hiring, skills development, succession).
- Engage AWS solution architects and technical specialists to review architecture, cost optimisation and best-practice adoption.
Technical and Operational
- Collaborate closely with Product teams, Software and Data engineers to maintain and develop tools and infrastructure, driving innovation and optimising existing and new product value streams.
- Lead and advise on the modernisation of end-to-end ETL and real-time streaming pipelines, refining development processes and introducing relevant technologies and tools.
- Work extensively with AWS cloud platforms and tools, applying Infrastructure as Code (particularly Terraform) and prioritising both cost optimisation and secure network configurations.
- Ensure robust security by implementing and managing cybersecurity frameworks and tools to protect systems against threats.
- Apply network knowledge to optimise and secure infrastructure, ensuring efficient communication and data flow across systems.
- Implement a proactive patch management strategy to keep all systems updated with the latest security patches.
- Adhere to change management protocols and version control standards, ensuring secure code repositories and reliable backup strategies for key intellectual property.
- Build, operate and improve CI/CD pipelines; contribute to incident response, root-cause analysis and service continuity plans; define and track SLOs/SLAs with appropriate observability.
- Effectively present and explain advanced technical designs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
What we are looking for:
Essential
- Bachelor’s degree in software, network or cybersecurity (or demonstrable equivalent experience).
- At least 6 years’ experience in a DevOps role, including recent hands-on delivery and prior leadership/mentoring of engineers.
- Proven experience or certification in AWS.
- Proven experience in troubleshooting and debugging SQL, SNS, SQS, Kinesis, C# (.NET Core), S3, FTP, AWS Lambda; HTTP-level REST API experience (and awareness of previous standards such as SOAP).
- Proven operating system administration (Windows and Linux).
- Proven experience with networking components and systems, including web servers, firewalls and network routing.
- Familiarity with automation tooling (e.g. Jenkins) and runtime/integrated analysis/observability tooling (e.g. New Relic).
- Familiarity with best-in-class analytical capabilities and data warehousing (e.g. Redshift, OpenSearch, Athena, SQL).
- Understanding of architectural patterns for microservices leveraging relational and big-data technologies.
- Disciplined, self-starter attitude with a drive to improve systems and processes and a willingness to learn.
- Excellent documentation of processes.
- Demonstrable experience managing employees and external contractors, setting objectives and ensuring delivery.
Desirable
- Provisioning new technical assets (e.g. EC2 build), Kubernetes, Docker and associated virtualisation or containerisation technology.
- Complete familiarity with Agile development process
