Job Description

The Opportunity

Cint seeks a Cloud Infrastructure FinOps Engineer to join our Infrastructure team, reporting to the Director of Infrastructure.

As a Cloud Infrastructure FinOps Engineer at Cint, you will contribute to designing, building and maintaining scalable and secure cloud infrastructure. You will have the opportunity to work with the latest technologies, we always strive to be at the forefront of the latest tech stacks and tools used within our domain. You’ll work closely with our product engineering teams to help support our cloud platform, focussing on automation, performance and reliability.

Whilst this is an engineering first role, you will help ensure cost efficient operations through FinOps aligned practices. As a Cloud Infrastructure FinOps Engineer, you’ll contribute to cloud cost visibility and optimisation efforts by supporting tagging strategies, cost attribution tooling and integration of FinOps data into engineering workflows. You’ll bring the confidence and influence to not only lead technical FinOps initiatives, but champion that mentality and understanding across R&D, driving harmony between infrastructure, engineering and product teams.

The Team

The Infrastructure Team’s mission is to design, build and develop secure and highly available infrastructure, but also to provide a self-service environment that enables software development teams to move fast, stay compliant and take end-to-end responsibility for their products. As part of this, we incorporate FinOps practices to ensure our Infrastructure is not only performant and reliable but cost efficient and transparent. We enable engineering teams to understand the financial impact of their decisions and empower them to make cost conscious decisions through data and accountability.

Major elements of our platform include AWS (we make significant use of S3, RDS, Kinesis, EC2, EMR, ElastiCache, ElasticSearch and EKS), Linux, Terraform, Kubernetes, Docker, Packer, Ansible and Jenkins. We support applications and services written in Golang, Python, Java, Scala and .Net. We monitor and alert on everything we deploy via Grafana, Prometheus, Graphite and ELK stacks.

The team holds itself accountable to a high standard of build quality. We have recently completed the first major phase of a completely green-field infrastructure and platform rebuild that is designed to underpin Cint’s business applications for the next decade. We are compulsive about infrastructure as code (nothing in our platform is created or deployed unless via a code change), committed to cost visibility and optimisation, along with being driven to achieve a full end to end continuous deployment pipeline.

What we are looking for

  • Work as part of the Infrastructure team on sprints that evolve our core platform and systems
  • Provide point of expertise on infrastructure and CI/CD to our wider engineering teams - often working as part of their scrum on larger projects

  • Automate the build and deployment of software to our cloud platform, eliminating all repetitive manual operations and becoming more efficient and effective.

  • You’ll act as a subject matter expert on cloud cost optimisation efforts, integrating FinOps principles into Infrastructure workflows

  • Ownership, shaping and evolve tagging strategies to enable accurate cloud cost attribution and spend visibility

  • Enhancement our monitoring and alerting systems to enable engineering teams to successfully operate and gain insights into the behaviour of applications in “hands-off” environments

  • Acting as a key person to help product and engineering teams succeed by providing insights and context they need to deliver more effectively

  • Partnerships with engineering and product teams to align infrastructure practices with cost aware operations

  • You’ll be someone that shares our values and ambitions and can bring something to the team that we can benefit from. It might be prior experience of the journey, architectural insight into cloud native systems, specific technology expertise in parts of our stack or a combination of them all. Whatever it is, you will be the kind of person that is energised by complex challenges, teamwork and problem solving.

  • Participate in an on-call rotation and assist with troubleshooting issues that arise

Qualifications

Qualifications

  • You have experience in predominantly cloud infrastructure roles (AWS) working within teams that practice DevOps with exposure to FinOps engineering.

  • You have demonstrable proficiency in AWS native FinOps tools, or third party vendors such as Vantage, CloudHealth, CloudCustodian

  • You have an understanding of cost drivers and financial principles in a cloud environment

  • You can interact comfortably with AWS via CLI and/or API

  • You have expertise and solid experience in deploying infrastructure as code with, at minimum, Terraform and ideally some of the supporting cast (Ansible, Packer)

  • You have excellent knowledge of building and running Docker images/containers

  • You have excellent knowledge and understanding of the software development lifecycle, including the use of git and continuous integration tools (Jenkins’ Groovy DSL, TravisCI, GitHub Actions etc.)

  • You have a grasp of “cloud native” and 12-Factor applications

  • You have good knowledge of monitoring and alerting using one or more of: Graphite, Statsd, Prometheus, Grafana, PagerDuty

  • You have expertise in at least one scripting or programming language (Python, Bash, Ruby, Node, Golang, Java)

What you need to know about the Belfast Tech Scene

If asked to name the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, you might not say Belfast. Similarly, if asked to name Europe's leading destination for foreign direct investment in new software development, Belfast might not come to mind. Yet, both are true. The city has emerged as a tech powerhouse, recently ranked among the best in the U.K. for tech careers — especially for software developers. It also leads the U.K. with the highest percentage of software development jobs advertised.
