AECOM's Surface Transportation Team in Ireland—a 150+ strong professional network operating across Dublin, Cork, Galway, and Belfast – is thriving due to significant growth fueled by a robust pipeline of major Roads, Public Transport and Greenway programmes.

We are seeking a driven and experienced Civil Engineer (or Infrastructure Engineer) to join our 50+ strong Highways team in Belfast.

We welcome applications from those with industry experience and the ambition to progress from their current role to become a Chartered Engineer in future that will lead our projects for our clients.

  • Roads: Major road schemes including the A24 Ballynahinch Bypass (Co. Down), N54 Tullybryan Realignment (Co. Monaghan), Newry Southern Relief Road (Co. Down), A6 Dualling Phase 2 (Co. Derry~Londonderry)
  • Public Transport: Delivery teams for the TII Luas Programme and the NTA BusConnects Programme
  • Greenways: Our vast programme of Greenways (>300km) in the Republic of Ireland for TII and Local Authorities, including major greenway schemes like Barnesmore Gap Greenway in Co. Donegal.
  • Multidisciplinary Exposure: Gain hands-on experience across the entire project lifecycle, from early feasibility and statutory consent through to detailed design, construction support, and contract administration.

Your Role & Responsibilities

You will:

  • Manage design packages on a diverse range of projects from concept to construction stage, including:
  • Major highway projects (to DMRB UK & Ireland Standards).
  • Bus infrastructure projects (to LTN 1/24, NTA standards)
  • Greenway/active travel projects (to Cycling by Design/TII DMRB).
  • Know and apply UK and/or Irish design standards including (the UK & Irish DMRB, Cycle by Design, DMURS, Cycle Design Manual) to create safe, people-focused transport solutions. 
  • Deliver high quality deliverables and service to our clients, meeting our quality standards and their expectations within time and budget constraints.
  • Work seamlessly within a multidisciplinary team, seamlessly collaborating with technicians, engineers and specialists in other disciplines (e.g., drainage, structures, environmental).
  • Work directly with clients, local authorities, and stakeholders, guiding them through technical challenges and relevant statutory approval processes (Northern Ireland Roads Order, Republic of Ireland Planning Permission, Environmental Impact Assessment).
  • Develop our team, through mentoring of apprentices, contributing to AECOM’s culture of growth and continuous learning.

Qualifications

Ready to push the limits of what’s possible?

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • Bachelor or Masters Degree in Civil Engineering or similar.
  • Candidates who demonstrate their commitment and progression toward Chartership in future.
  • Post-graduate experience in relevant areas such as civil engineering, highways, public transport and greenways.
  • Knowledge and experience in the relevant design standards in the UK and Ireland applicable to our projects (e.g. the DMRB, DMURS, LTN 1/20, LTN 1/24, NTA Cycle Design Manual)
  • Knowledge of contract documentation for major transport projects, including typical forms of contract (NEC/Public Works Contract) and associated Specifications to MCHW/MCRW.
  • Knowledge of statutory planning and design approvals in the UK and/or Ireland.
  • Experience in working within teams of varying sizes and capabilities to deliver work packages to a high quality.
