We are seeking an experienced CDM Principal Designer to join a multi-disciplinary team to lead and coordinate health and safety considerations throughout the design and pre-construction phases of projects. The successful candidate will provide expert guidance to clients, designers, and project teams, ensuring compliance with CDM Regulations and the effective management of design risk. Whilst the CDM Principal Designer role will be the primary focus of the position, the successful candidate will also undertake site inspections, compliance reviews, and risk-based audits to assess the effectiveness of project risk management arrangements and the implementation of CDM duties. The role requires a proactive approach to identifying hazards, challenging poor practices, and supporting clients and project teams in achieving safe and compliant project delivery
The successful candidate will also be expected to identify opportunities to strengthen client risk management processes and develop additional CDM, health and safety, and compliance-related services that add value to clients and enhance project outcomes. This will suit a commercially aware professional who can build strong client relationships, provide practical risk management solutions, and contribute to the continued growth of the CDM specialism within the business.

Responsibilities- Act as Principal Designer in accordance with the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.
- Plan, manage, monitor, and coordinate health and safety during the pre-construction phase of projects.
- Advise clients on their duties under CDM 2015 and support them in fulfilling their legal obligations.
- Coordinate designers and other duty holders to ensure hazards are identified, eliminated, reduced, or controlled through design.
- Facilitate design risk management workshops and reviews throughout the project lifecycle.
- Review designs and specifications to ensure health and safety risks are appropriately considered and mitigated.
- Prepare, maintain, and review Pre-Construction Information (PCI).
- Liaise with clients, designers, contractors, and other stakeholders to promote effective communication and coordination of health and safety matters.
- Ensure the principles of prevention are applied throughout the design process.
- Support the development, compilation, and handover of the Health and Safety File.
- Undertake site inspections and audits to verify that design assumptions, control measures, and risk management arrangements are being effectively implemented.
- Provide technical advice on construction health and safety, risk management, and CDM compliance issues.
- Monitor project compliance with CDM requirements and identify areas for improvement.
- Prepare reports and provide clear recommendations to clients regarding project risks and compliance obligations.
- Build and maintain strong client relationships through the delivery of high-quality CDM and risk management services.
- Identify opportunities to provide additional health and safety, compliance, risk management, and advisory services that add value to clients and support business growth.
- Contribute to business development activities, including client presentations, proposals, and service promotion.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of CDM legislation, health and safety best practice, and industry developments.
Essential:
- Experience operating as a CDM Principal Designer or CDM/Health & Safety Consultant.
- Strong understanding of CDM 2015 and construction risk management.
- Ability to review technical drawings and identify significant design risks.
- Experience conducting site inspections, audits, and compliance reviews.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Commercial awareness and the ability to identify value-added service opportunities.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to client sites.
Desirable:
- Membership of a relevant professional body such as APS, IOSH. Chartered status (CMIOSH, CMaPS, or equivalent) would be advantageous.
- NEBOSH Level 6 National Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals would be advantageous.Good computer literacy skills to make effective use of a variety of ICT platforms and applications.
- Strong influencing skills in order to energise others and complete the job in an accurate and timely manner.
- The role is based remotely with regular site meeting and site inspections, with frequent UK travel as required to maintain overall HSE and Crawford and Company compliance.
- Being part of a team that provides assistance with written, verbal queries and post, assist in issuing Pre-Construction Information, reviewing CPP’s; reviews and chasing of outstanding information. The CDM Unit supports the whole of Crawford UK on CDM compliance.
- Assist in providing ongoing support to the whole of Crawford and Company UK including the Corporate Governance and Ethics and Compliance teams.
The combination of CMaPS + CMIOSH + NEBOSH Diploma would be regarded as a strong credentials package.
Provide a H&S vetting procedure for non CCC contractors and provide CCC with H&S vetting for all new contractors
