Main purpose of the role:

As a Business Analyst in Kainos, you will act as a liaison between the product, engineering, architecture and security departments. You will be responsible for ensuring clarity of requirements (functional and non-functional), backlog readiness and early detection of risks/dependencies so that teams deliver the right value on time.

Key Objectives:

  • Translate roadmap epics into estimable, incremental stories.

  • Keep 1–2 sprints of “Ready” work (healthy backlog hygiene).

  • Ensure complete, testable functional & non‑functional acceptance criteria.

  • Surface and mitigate gaps, dependencies, risks early.

  • Communicate progress, changes, and impacts crisply to maintain trust.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Requirements & Analysis: Decompose epics; write/validate AC including edge cases & NFR hooks; escalate material gaps; synthesize input from tech/QA/security.

  • Backlog Health: Prepare stories ahead; prune stale items; manage priorities, blockers, bugs.

  • Documentation: Maintain concise Confluence pages (context, flows, decisions, data); keep JIRA epic/story structure & dependencies current.

  • Communication: Proactive status & risk updates; partner with PO on scope alignment; support team during refinement/planning/ad‑hoc Q&A.

  • Facilitation & Collaboration: Lead/co‑lead workshops; coordinate with other BAs; sustain awareness of adjacent streams.

  • Quality Support: Ensure traceability from AC to test scenarios; enforce Definition of Ready (INVEST).

  • Solution Partnership: Suggest lean/cost‑effective options; draft initial technical assumptions; operate with minimal lead input on smaller changes.

  • Non‑Functional Excellence: Systematically capture & track performance, security, accessibility, resilience, observability, privacy needs; challenge gaps.

  • Strategic Contribution: Slice large epics for incremental value; maintain annual workstream view; preempt sequencing conflicts.

  • Documentation Stewardship: Retire obsolete pages, peer review other BA artifacts.

  • Cross‑Team Continuity: Backfill for absent BAs; share patterns and insights across streams.

Minimum (Essential) Requirements:

  • 3–6+ yrs as BA / Product Owner / Solution Architect / similar in Agile delivery.

  • Proven epic → story decomposition with solid AC.

  • Strong workshop & refinement facilitation; story mapping.

  • Modeling skills (flows, states, light UML, data).

  • JIRA & Confluence proficiency; grasp of SDLC & CI/CD basics.

  • Exposure to performance, security, accessibility (WCAG) considerations.

  • Clear written & verbal communicator (risks/dependencies).

Desirable:

  • Workday ecosystem & auditing domain exposure.

  • REST/API basics; basic SQL / data validation.

  • Risk/compliance initiative experience.

  • Experience in scaled frameworks (SAFe/LeSS) with pragmatic agility.

What you need to know about the Belfast Tech Scene

If asked to name the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, you might not say Belfast. Similarly, if asked to name Europe's leading destination for foreign direct investment in new software development, Belfast might not come to mind. Yet, both are true. The city has emerged as a tech powerhouse, recently ranked among the best in the U.K. for tech careers — especially for software developers. It also leads the U.K. with the highest percentage of software development jobs advertised.
