We are now looking for an Applied Scientist / Analytics Engineer to join our Decision Support and Advanced Analytics team in UPM Fibres. This position is primarily located in Helsinki, Finland. Other UPM locations can be considered.

What you will do
  • Lead and implement practical applications of mathematical modeling and machine learning to support operational and strategic decisions across UPM Fibres

  • Collaborate closely with business stakeholders to identify and prioritize analytics use cases with real-world impact

  • Take ownership of the development, deployment and maintainability of analytics solutions, ensuring they meet production standards

  • Contribute to the design and implementation of robust data pipelines and analytics infrastructure

  • Support the growth and technical capability of the Advanced Analytics team by bringing in best practices in development, documentation, testing and versioning

Who you are

Our team works across various fields of advanced analytics, including mathematical modeling, machine learning, and forecasting. We are looking for candidates who can strengthen us in one or more of these areas, especially those who bring strong software engineering skills. You do not need to check every box below to apply. If you see yourself in some of these, we would love to hear from you.

  • You have a university degree (M.Sc. or Ph.D.) in mathematics, economics, computer science, engineering, operations research, statistics, or similar

  • You have minimum 2 years of industry experience delivering robust mathematical modeling or machine learning solutions into production

  • You have programming skills in Python with solid understanding of software development practices

  • You have experience deploying solutions to cloud platforms, especially Azure, and familiarity with MLOps/DevOps principles

  • You have collaborative mindset with problem-solving skills and the drive to turn ideas into maintainable solutions

  • You have practical experience in formulating mathematical models (e.g., LP/MILP, heuristics, simulations, econometric models) and integrating them into business operations

  • You have hands-on experience with developing and deploying ML models (e.g., classification, regression, deep learning) and solid understanding of the model lifecycle

  • You are fluent in English

  • Familiarity with BI tools like Tableau or Power BI is an asset
