Job Title: Director, 1LoD (First Line of Defence) Risk and Underwriting - Wealth Management and Business Lending

Within the Private Bank, Wealth Management and Business Lending (WM&BL) is the Lending product centre of excellence offering bespoke lending solutions to HNW/UHNW (High Net Worth/Ultra High Net Worth) clients globally. The division comprises 200+ specialist lenders, offering solutions secured against liquid assets (Lombard Lending), Real Estate, Art, Aircraft, Alternatives, unlisted shares and other personal assets. Wealth Management and Business Lending forms a key part of the wider PB Lending pillar of the Bank.

Critical to the success of the Lending business is the robust management of credit risks in the First Line of Defence – ensuring the execution of high quality and franchise accretive client loan transactions with an optimised risk / reward balance and best in class monitoring processes. As the Director - 1LoD Risk and Underwriting you will, working in close co-operation with the front-line structurers and the Credit Risk Management (CRO) control function, support the devising, implementation and maintenance of Risk Appetite, underwriting and process settings in support of the division’s Chief Operating Officer (COO) and ultimately the Head of PB (Private Bank) Lending.

Your key responsibilities

  • Spearhead the continuous improvement of Lending management of credit risk relevant activities, ensuring best in class underwriting and back book risk management.
  • In tandem with the Senior Product SMEs, drive the build-out of rigorous, consistent and harmonised underwriting processes through development of training, tools, processes and templates (and associated quality assurance processes).
  • Support the development of a Business-Delegated Credit Authorities framework (and governance / administration thereof) for selected products.
  • Oversee the continued build-out and management of the Global Portfolio Management team to support credit hygiene and the production of actionable risk management insights.
  • Spearhead credit risk / underwriting - relevant audit remediation and support regulatory dialogue
  • Act as the governance lead for Collateral and Credit Policy adherence in line with bank policies.
  • Act as a first port of call for any additional risk-related topics that may arise from time to time.

Your skills and experience

  • Strong industry experience in a global bank; degree qualified or equivalent
  • Strong experience in, and understanding of, Credit Risk Management in a Wholesale and/or Wealth Management Lending organization, preferably in a regulated banking environment.
  • Strong commercial acumen, with a proven track record in leading projects, balancing client/commercial dynamics, and robust credit risk control
  • Working understanding of key lending products offered (including Real Estate, Lombard, Alternatives (PE) including Fund Financing – and bespoke structured lending products
  • Proven track record in dealing with senior leaders across key stakeholder functions (and across divisions) with a view to problem solving
  • Strong leadership, communication, project management and problem-solving skills, with ability to balance collaboration and “push-back” as appropriate
